Members Lewis77
Hello to all and a pre-Thank You for any advice given. Basically what's the best low budget vocal condenser Mic? Say $50 each way of $100 but would go to $200 if worth it! I have an MXL V6 Silicon Valve mic and would like a back up. (By the way I've started to get a background hum or wee bit of feedback on that mic, any ideas what could be causing it? the leads and connection into the audio interface are all fine.) Thank You for your help. (by the way may post this in the other recording forum)
Phil O'Keefe
I think you can get a MXL V67i for around $100, or a bit over that if you shop around a bit. I like them because they have the bright / warm dual capsules, and the warm side is much flatter than the usual overhyped high frequency response that is fairly typical of a lot of mikes made in China. IIRC, the V67G is basically the same as the "warm" side of the V67i, but unless it's significantly less, I'd recommend the i version due to the increased flexibility and your limited mic resources. Members UstadKhanAli
I've heard good things about the MXLs for the money. The other one to compare it to is possibly a large diaphragm condenser mic called the Audio-Technica AT2020. The MXL might be better, I have no idea, but it's the only other one I can think of that people say is decent for that price.
Members offramp
If you could save up a little more, you might look into the Avant CK-7.
Members Front End Audio
I am a big fan of the Apex 460. It is a decent mic for the price and it can be modified (tube, capsule, capacitors) to meet your needs! It also has 9 polar patterns to choose from making it a very versatile mic for the price. I have used a stock 460 on many different sources and the results were always very pleasing to the ear. Nicholas
Members WRGKMC
I've had an MXL for maybe 8 years (along with many others). They arent bad mics at all for the price. They are full range, fairly flat responce, and decent sensitivity. I've gotten many good recordings from them. They arent exactly what I call a unique or overly warm sound but some of that has to do with how the preamp works with the mic.

It's essentially the same mic as the Avant CV-12 I bought last year. I love it.
Phil O'Keefe
CK-12 / 460 is going to cost quite bit more than his stated hundred bucks budget cap though...
Members offramp
He said he'd go to 20 if it was worth it; the 460 is only 219.
