Members GAS Man
These two just in today Epiphone 58 Korina Flying V & Ovation 2778LX Standard Elite Contour Acoustic-Electric Didn't mean to have two arrive on one day, but picked up the Epiphone on 9/2 off of Flea-bay (and it does have a flea or two) and the other I ordered on a blow-out deal from MF just last Sunday, 9/7. The Epi was sold "as new" in mint condition for $350+$40 S&H. Since it came with an Epi harshell case, that was about $200 off the everyday street retail price on these buggers. The setup was goofed up a bit, neck was proper, but bridge was a bit cattywampus. (real high on the bass side, and usually I've found Epi's set-up better out of the box than Gibsons ). The bridge pup has some scuffing on one edge facing the neck pickup (no big deal) and the case and guitar smelled like cat piss. Other than that, everything's swell. Wait, what was that he said about cat piss? Yeah, it smells kinda sour, like piss. Now I got into an ebay squabble with the seller since it took her a while to acknowledge my purchase and payment (a PayPal dispute got her attention) but she felt I jumped the gun. And even though I released the dispute as "resolved" immediately upon getting a shipping notice, she was ripping into me for a couple days. Who knows, maybe she took a squat. But there's no "hot spot" smell areas in the case. Gross I know, but I sniffed it out a bit to see if I could find "ground zero" of the odor and it seemed to be evenly distributed. So the case is outside airing out. Hey this thing says "MIK", does that mean it's an older stock. I know my Korina Explorer that I've had for a few years is MIK, but I wonder if newer ones are MIC. But if mine is old stock, that might explain the sour case smell. But for the savings, I guess I did okay. The Ovation was a flyer code 808T blowout for $599.99. Not bad for a USA Ovation. (This deal might still be available, I just received that flyer last Friday in a shipment). It seems fine, but I haven't had much time with it yet. So far I worked on setting up the Epiphone, neck relief was fine, but adjusted the bridge, pickups and intonation. Typical Epiphone, the A saddle will have to be flipped to get enough travel, but it's close enough for now. Then I spent some time A/B-ing my two Vs I played the Epi first and got that fat warmth I was expecting. I wanted a V that wasn't too bright or scooped sounding. Then switching to the Gibson, I was blown away how much more complex, loud and blaring the tone is ('57 Classic & '57 Classic+). Then switching back to the Epiphone, you notice the safety of the warmth, and more of an old school bluesy tone. Well that was my reason for picking up a second V. , i.e. a different voice. Well, I guess that's it folks. Pray for my salvation and remind me to get the hardshell case back inside from the picnic table before going to bed. P.S. Let me know if you have any good "sour case smell removal remedies".

Members GAS Man
Here's the original pic off of the flea-bay sale. Shows the smelly case. I must have my PC updated with "Smell-O-Vision" 5.3, then I'd a known. The guitar was packed fairly well, but she used a bunch of old crumpled up Epiphone catalog pages. I just spent about a half hour cleaning that {censored} up off the floor. Un-crumpling, smoothing out - for the recylce bin, you know, that "go green" bull{censored}. Plus there was some interesting reading in there. Pretty damn good Gibson/Epiphone pickup chart that compares them in terms of output with other brands as well. First time I'd found that info in print. Usually you just have to settle with the Gibson bar graph. Next I've got to figure out which crumpled sheet is the one to retain for this vital guitar-nerd info.
Members vrm
I've always thought those korina V's looked kickass! Are the stock p-up's muddy at all under gain or just rolled of (warm) on the high-end?

But hey, anybody else notice the difference between the two on their strap buttons? Interesting huh?
Members GAS Man
I've always thought those korina V's looked kickass! Are the stock p-up's muddy at all under gain or just rolled of (warm) on the high-end? I need to explore that a bit more. But generally I would think the answer will be "yes". I have the '58 Korina Explorer and I remember A/B-ing that against my son's '76 RI Gibson Explorer with the 496/500T. In comparison, the Gibson under high gain was more rich with harmonic overtones and had a much more focused tone whereas the Epiphone Explorer was fat and/but flabby. The V will be a little less flabby (muddy) since Vs tend to sound more scooped for obvious reasons. But then again, I wanted flab on this guitar. I'm much more into bluesy tones than metal tones, but I'd still think that this guitar could be a great platform for modding to more aggressive focused pickups. I bought this one to be played with light overdrive. The necks also feel very different. That Gibson has an immediate wide-thin feel compared to the Epiphone. I got a good deal on the Gibson (somewhere around $1700 IIRC) but the price advantage for a modding platform is obvious with these Epi's.

Members GAS Man
Thanks for reminding me that I don't have a Flying V. Hey, I'm special. I even have one that smelled like cat pee. But if I wasn't a gear whore, I'd probably pass on a V. But there was something defiant about me that made me want to make a V work for me. I first got a good deal on the Gibson Faded V, but returned it. Just sounded too scooped for the stuff I play. But the Gibson has the vibe and the Epi has the resonant warmth, so I think I can play with those qualities. Thanks for the parade.

Members dcindc
You got a great deal on that V. That is also the only V I would ever buy. I seem to rememeber reading here that the Vs have never changed over to being built in C, but I could be wrong. I think somebody posted something that gets rid of that smell, but I can;t remember right now. Dryer sheet? moth balls? Something odd. Any HNGD! Members EllenGtrGrl
Yeah, a dryer sheet also helps remove the smell. BTW, nice looking Epiphone V Gas Man! I've alwya thought the Epiphone Korinas were good looking. BTW, does anybody know if Epiphone ever released a "reissue" Moderne (like Gibson did). Of the three korina modern guitars (V, Explorer, and Moderne), that's the one I'd like. But the Gibson reissues are way out of my price league.
