Told ya there is a big difference

I am not sure if fretboard radius bothers me much. My 7 strings are 16" and it doesnt feel much different to me than my 12" Gibson. My Charvel has that 10"-16" tapered radius and I cant say I notice it much...

      • I love the Charvel radius, since I do a lot of lead noodling.

I don't play many leads, so

The Charvel doesn't feel as nice to me as some of my other guitars, but I don't know if that is the radius or the neck width. Its not my favorite, but I still really like that guitar. Although, I will say I think I like it less since I put the Duncan Distortion in and tuned it down to D with 10's. That is my usual treatment, but I think the guitar lost something when I did that.

I am thinking about returning it to stock. One reason I turned it down was because it was killing my wrist in E. I thought it was the neck profile, but I found some information later on about stiff springs, so I thought about putting it back in E and go down to 2 springs or an arrow pattern. It was also extremely buzzy stock, but when I changed pickups I found that the tone zone ground was not soldered, so I think it would sound much better if I returned it to stock...

          • Alder is pretty bright, the DD might be a poor choice. I run 2 springs in everything now.

            • I like the DD a lot, but it seems to have lost the mids which made it good have good Van Halenish mids I guess what mean is it used to sound good on chords and such and it made me play a different way/style, but now it seems like more of a chug machine like all of my other guitars which is what I didn't want to happen.

You know, I NEVER thought about the stupid springs, all I know is the guitar made me play like a 80s shred master, which in turn killed my wrist. I figured it was the neck profile, but for whatever reason tuning it down helped. There were some threads later on where people were complaining about Charvels feeling stiff and hurting wrists... seems like it all lead back to springs.

So, you run 2 springs? No problems with that? I don't think I have ever done that, but it may work...

Makes me wonder if that was part of the problems I had with Ibanez RGs years ago since I bought many of them new...

How low does the guitar hang on you? I can't play mine low...it has to be up some. Maybe that is contributing to your wrist issue?

I play all my guitars except the V pretty high. Not quite Tom Morello high, but decently high.

Ok....so no hanging down just above your knee stuff?

Nope. My picking hand is usually about 1"-2" above my belly button....

Nothing too crazy. Maybe a 20 degree angle or something.

That is one reason why the V throws me off, because I keep it much lower and at a much higher angle. That is one reason I dont play it much.

                              • I keep the body low, but my neck at a big angle. My V did that perfect.
