At some of our local festivals, banks and other third party financial companies put out portable ATM machines that charge a $2.50 fee for using them. People can get the cash to spend and the banks make a good bit of money from it. Returns probably depend on how many things at the event require money from the customers. If they aren't draining their pockets the ATMs won't make much money....

Well... we'll have a dance street. We're blocking off Main Street... er-um: we're blocking off the two blocks of Main Street that's paved that is.

Here's a picture I just took (excuse to go for a scooter ride) of the portion of Main Street that we intend to block-off for the festival. I took this picture from where the stage is intended to be. The park is on the left (approx. 1 sq. city block in size), city hall is off camera on the right.

BTW: The vehicles shown in the picture on Main Street is a fairly good representation of our 80am rush-hour traffic congestion.

I just returned from our second FHF committee meeting. I took all of the relevant suggestions (being most of the suggestions offered) from the forum with me... very helpful stuff.

          Thank you.

One thing we tried last year at our festival was to make all kids games/activities $0.25. This included the dunk tank, inflatable bounce houses, etc. Our though was that for a few bucks parents could get rid of the kids for an hour or so while they ate, played cards, socialized. It worked! The kids games were the second most profitable item (beer truck being most profitable).

Here's a question that came up at last night's meeting:

"How many porta-potties do we need for the festival?"

Any insight on answering that question would be great.

As I understand it, generally there's city or county codes that specify the porta-pottie ratio vs. anticipated crowd. Beings as our's is an incorporated town, apparently this is a matter of our town code... except our town code seems to be sans porta-pottie regulations (it's never been an issue before now)... so we're making up the code as we go. We do have a fairly nice public restroom facility in the park, which is where the festival will be held, but the public restroom is 1ea. male occupant and 1ea. female occupant at a time... so we figured a few more porta-potties is in order. We asked the porta-pottie vendor for a recommendation... his suggestion of "a minimum of 8ea. (at approx. $100ea.)" seems like over-kill to the committee since we're expecting a max crowd size of maybe 200. Of-course, we don't want to short-change the crowd on relief stations... and porta-potties isn't something we have access to augment at will the day of the festival if it becomes obvious that we under estimated.

I don't really know how to go about figuring this, but 8 units for 200 people only allows 25 uses per unit. Ask your provider how many uses are normal before servicing. And bear in mind, there's a big difference between capacity and usability.

There are some general formulas, but I would expect that 2 or even 4 additional units would be plenty. They are generally good for ~200 uses before pumpout. If this is a one day festival it's not going to be an issue.

One unit should be good for 200 uses.

Hey, that was indeed a pretty good guesstimate!

Well, I've been to one world fair, a picnic, and a rodeo, and that's the stupidest thing I ever heard come over a set of earphones.

The reward for that job is taking a nice ride through a shady woods on a hot summer day.
