Members srp72ee
One thing we tried last year at our festival was to make all kids games/activities $0.25. This included the dunk tank, inflatable bounce houses, etc. Our though was that for a few bucks parents could get rid of the kids for an hour or so while they ate, played cards, socialized. It worked! The kids games were the second most profitable item (beer truck being most profitable).
Members W. M. Hellinger
Here's a question that came up at last night's meeting: "How many porta-potties do we need for the festival?" Any insight on answering that question would be great. As I understand it, generally there's city or county codes that specify the porta-pottie ratio vs. anticipated crowd. Beings as our's is an incorporated town, apparently this is a matter of our town code... except our town code seems to be sans porta-pottie regulations (it's never been an issue before now)... so we're making up the code as we go. We do have a fairly nice public restroom facility in the park, which is where the festival will be held, but the public restroom is 1ea. male occupant and 1ea. female occupant at a time... so we figured a few more porta-potties is in order. We asked the porta-pottie vendor for a recommendation... his suggestion of "a minimum of 8ea. (at approx. $100ea.)" seems like over-kill to the committee since we're expecting a max crowd size of maybe 200. Of-course, we don't want to short-change the crowd on relief stations... and porta-potties isn't something we have access to augment at will the day of the festival if it becomes obvious that we under estimated. I don't really know how to go about figuring this, but 8 units for 200 people only allows 25 uses per unit. Ask your provider how many uses are normal before servicing. And bear in mind, there's a big difference between capacity and usability.
Members agedhorse
There are some general formulas, but I would expect that 2 or even 4 additional units would be plenty. They are generally good for ~200 uses before pumpout. If this is a one day festival it's not going to be an issue.

Members W. M. Hellinger
Update: 4 days from now (Sept 22)... it's gonna happen. www.farmingtonharvestfest.org I don't think we (the organizers) could stop it if we wanted to at this point. It's been a major learning experience for me so-far, and it ain't over yet. One thing I've gained is a new perspective (insight) of what event organizers deal with... and all the stuff that's likely swimming around in their heads by "showtime". I am looking forward to the wrap-up party... which a big ole nap for a wrap-up party would suit me just fine I'm thinking. BTW: If any of you folks happen to be coming through Farmington WA on Sept 22... stop by the park... it should be fun.
Members W. M. Hellinger
Any words of wisdom from anyone who's been in my shoes? Have an adult beverage and try to relax maybe? Right now... attendance estimates are anywhere between 50 and 5000. I'll have a better handle on this number come Sunday.

I agree Winston. I figure by 7:15 pm the headliner will be in the saddle... and I can either head back stage or to the beer garden... 'bout then. There's a lot to do in the next 48 hrs.... I'm washing & waxing my 1972 C-50 Chevy drum riser flatbed as we speak... in-between hurridly assembling some connectors on 6-4 cable runs... and making some contingency calls on lining up last minute keg and toilet paper relief supplies (should the need arrise). Members basschaplain
Disappointed I can't be there. My family very much enjoys going to these types of events. We've even altered vacations to attend festivals in communities we were just passing through. My thoughts and a prayer are with you.

Members Axisplayer
Mark, I am willing to bet that was better than any high paying gig you have done in a long time. I love the shows that make feel good as I am rolling the 12 miles of cable at the end of the night. Make everything come into focus and I go home feeling good about what I can do for others sometimes. Thrilled for you!
CMS Author Craig Vecchione Posted September 24, 2012 CMS Author Share Posted September 24, 2012 So it was a resounding success?? That's great news, Mark! I'm glad to see these things actually can go well and be worth the time and effort. Sleep well.

Note to self: Never again play a set for an audience containing significant amounts of friends, neighbors, and family... unless wearing really dark sunglasses. We're having the festival committee wrap-up meeting tomorrow evening. I previously suggested we host a photo gallary on the festival's website... I'll push that forward at the meeting and see what surfaces. We are getting a lot more hits to the website after the event than we did before the event.I was a bit surprised at the quantity (many) of pictures folks snapped of "the gear"... FOH mix position seemed to have especially captured the audience's interest. I guess you probably don't often see a 52ch. Yamaha PM-4K at a street dance in a town of approx. 150 population.
