Members nat whilk II
Just wondering....I'm tired of stairsteps and bottlenecks and all that. Are the MIDI gods just waiting for Craig to tell them what to do? Surely some of you in HC land are in that loop somewhere... nat whilk ii
Members UstadKhanAli
There have been upgrades, but will they ever be adopted?
Members Anderton
It's constantly being updated, actually. But I do wish there was finer resolution on the controllers, like you can do with pitch bend...however, that's a pretty fundamental change. For now, it looks like interpolation or smoothing at the receiver is the best fix. For example, the DA7 mixer interpolated the 128 incoming MIDI values into 1,024 values, so the faders were nice and smooth.
Members girevik
Keith McMillen's Stringport paper mentions an upcoming HD Protocol for MIDI: http://www.keithmcmillen.com/downloads/files/stringport_icmc.pdf Open Sound Control is a widely used MIDI-alternative in the world of wireless motion controllers: http://www.osculator.net/wp/ http://rooreynolds.com/2007/04/05/hacking-with-osc-and-the-wiimote/ I read that the VAX77 keyboard implements HD Velocity but it got mixed reviews from those who tried it. Members Hard Truth
It feels to me that MIDI would be better with more resolution devoted to capturing the rhythm/timing of the performance. I also wish for more resolution for the controllers. I thought M-LAN was intended to be the new MIDI? Unfortunately, getting manufacturers to agree on a standard is difficult and rare, even though MIDI was clearly a win/win for everyone involved. So I'm skeptical we will ever see a newer MIDI adopted by all manufacturers.
Members techristian
Midi is like QWERTY. DVORAK might be better but QWERTY is firmly entrenched in the collective. MIDI should be replaced with GADI (glass audio device interface) but probably will be around another 50 years. Dan
Members girevik
The evolution of DAWs seems to have slowed down the demand for updates to the MIDI spec.
