i'd give a listen to Tony Williams Lifetime, especially with Allan Holdsworth.

And as far as Mahavishnu, I only recently got into them a bit (which led me to TWL). I remember the first time I heard "Birds Of Fire", it was just mind bending.

Return to Forever

Clarke-Duke Project

Weather Report

Herbie Hancock

Solo efforts by anyone in RTF, WR, or MO:

Jan Hammer

Billy Cobham

Jean-Luc Ponty

Chick Corea

Flora Purim

Joe Farrell

Airto Moreira

Al DiMeola

Joe Zawinul

Jaco Pastorius

Wayne Shorter

(Billy Cobham's "Spectrum" with Tommy Bolin is flipping brilliant.)

Check out the tribute CD put out on Shrapnel Records called "Visions of an Inner Mounting Apocolypse". I haven't heard all of it, but I grabbed the Jimmy Herring track, because I'm a big fan of his, and its awesome. There are some great players on there.

There is also a Miles tribute CD put out by that label that's cool.

zappa

I love Mahavishnu, but hate most other fusion type groups.....most other don't have the raw intensity and cohesiveness of M.O.

I do like Bitches Brew, and most other miles davis. YES is good too.

Certain Zappa records are amazing in a similar style.

My musical "quest" has led me to many other artists....none of which sound like Mahavishnu Orchestra. I'm glad. :thu:

I'll second the Tommy Bolin reccomendation. His work on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album, and his work on Alphonse Mouson's Mind Transplant album is jaw dropping.

His two solo albums are great as well, but they are not straight up fusion.

Pretty much this post FTW.

For hearing RTF, grab the 2 CD anthology that came out recently, it's chock full of their best tunes & blazes. :thu:

And any Jan Hammer Group stuff too!

I know M. Orchestra.

1) Weather Report

2) Steve Via (the solo albums, Ultra Zone, Fire Garden, etc.). Maybe some may disagree, but to me there is a lot of improvisation, or improvisational SOUNDING solo work. Relys heavily on studio/mixing, but to me there is a connect to both Zappa, and M. Orch.
