Members sylvesterlowery
i'd give a listen to Tony Williams Lifetime, especially with Allan Holdsworth. And as far as Mahavishnu, I only recently got into them a bit (which led me to TWL). I remember the first time I heard "Birds Of Fire", it was just mind bending. Members ccasey
Check out the tribute CD put out on Shrapnel Records called "Visions of an Inner Mounting Apocolypse". I haven't heard all of it, but I grabbed the Jimmy Herring track, because I'm a big fan of his, and its awesome. There are some great players on there. There is also a Miles tribute CD put out by that label that's cool. Chris
Members stratfan7
I'm not going to repeat anything that anyone's already said, but one of the only ones left that no one's said is early Larry Coryell. I love fusion too. A Tribute to Jack Johnson by Miles Davis is one of my favorite albums ever.

Members Cliff Fiscal
zappa I love Mahavishnu, but hate most other fusion type groups.....most other don't have the raw intensity and cohesiveness of M.O. I do like Bitches Brew, and most other miles davis. YES is good too. Certain Zappa records are amazing in a similar style. My musical "quest" has led me to many other artists....none of which sound like Mahavishnu Orchestra. I'm glad.
Members sbeirnes
I'll second the Tommy Bolin reccomendation. His work on Billy Cobham's Spectrum album, and his work on Alphonse Mouson's Mind Transplant album is jaw dropping. His two solo albums are great as well, but they are not straight up fusion.http://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-Billy-Cobham/dp/B000002I77/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1251383421&sr=8-1http://www.amazon.com/Mind-Transplant-Alphonse-Mouzon/dp/B00008CLMX/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1251383469&sr=1-

Pretty much this post FTW. For hearing RTF, grab the 2 CD anthology that came out recently, it's chock full of their best tunes & blazes. And any Jan Hammer Group stuff too! Members Woody_in_MN
I know M. Orchestra. 1) Weather Report2) Steve Via (the solo albums, Ultra Zone, Fire Garden, etc.). Maybe some may disagree, but to me there is a lot of improvisation, or improvisational SOUNDING solo work. Relys heavily on studio/mixing, but to me there is a connect to both Zappa, and M. Orch. - W
Members Neil-o-Mac
As an 'outside' pick, give The Mars Volta a go. Sometimes, to me, they sound like MO with a bit of an angry, ever-so-slightly punky edge. Their first album (De-Loused in the Comatorium) is my personal fave, but YMMV. Members Cliff Fiscal
Mars Volta sites MO as an influence, but sounds nothing like them. I love the first Mars Volta album by the way.

Members earfurblues
Early Jean-Luc Ponty for sure. Get Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats" too. Also early Tom Scott, great fusion with a wailing sax, and Larry Carlton on guitar.
