BTW This white eye look can be obtained in your middle age years with a steady regimen of masturbation. And lots of Viagra to bring on sudden hearing loss so you won't have to listen to Young Dudes whining all the time. That one was free. :thu:

Lol! It sure was. I was censored. I suppose that they don't like it when people talk {censored} about GC. I still don't like GC. To many bad experiences. Perhaps I was a little crude with my thread topic.

Had nothing to do with talking about GC. People make a sport out of dissin GC here regularly. I personally think the toilet paper in their restrooms are too scratchy. What? You've never been to their restrooms? Oh! I forgot.... the restrooms are reserved for employees and guys who advance to the next level in the KOTB!! :p

Just kidding! As an older, 56 year old guitarist who advanced, I'm convinced that there is a conspiracy against the youth of the nation!! It will be my sworn duty to continue as far into the contest as possible and throw light unto the nefarious hijinks. :D

It's a promotion and the main reason GC does it is for business. Could they do it more professionally? I don't know. I mean how professional is American Idol?

I just go for the yucks and camaraderie. It's nice to have a night out to meet some new people and talk about guitars. Hell, it's what I do here!

BTW - the only reason I edited your thread title is that we have rules against swearing in the titles. Kind of trying to keep the forum somewhat work safe and family safe.

Yes. As stated in my previous post, I was to crude. Good for you for advancing. The camaraderie sounds nice. Sorry, I don't get your toilet paper joke. Cheers. Also, I dont get your sarcasm. I know you're being sarcastic, but I don't get it.

I wonder how long it will be 'til you get banned...

Toss him on ignore. I'm certainly not crazy about people starting out their careers here by attacking somebody that ostensibly they haven't met before. But the interwebz is a strange place.

For Guitar Sinner. Calm down and get to know the place a bit. It's actually a pretty fun forum.

This is me. This is how I play. Bash me if you want to. I'm comfortable with my playing and I always have a great time...even at the KOTB contest.

Excellent video! You're playing is sweet and I love the vocals! Love the music!! I'm a fan! If I was in your neck of the woods I'd be coming out to see you guys play and consider it a night well spent!!!!

Contests don't mean {censored}! This is good music!!

I was at my local GC day before when the King of Blues was going on.

There certainly were all types too be seen at this one.

2 that stand out:

A 17-18 yo girl with a Ibby Semi hollow guitar.

Although she wasnt perfect she certainly had more skill and feel than 99% of the folks always demoing their wankage at GC.

The next was a mid 40's guy(like me) but with a Joe dirt Mullet and attire as well as a Vai like Custom Yamaha Super Strat .

He was the going joke until he played.

If you closed your eyes you could swear you heard a hybrid of BB King and Robert Cray. Excellent chops and feel.

Sadly neither went very far. Apparently the winner was a "known" tangent amongst the judges.

Guys, I found the experience VERY valuable for several reasons.

(1) I met some people who were AMAZING players and not just the winners.

(2) I got some real GREAT ideas just by watching some of these folks.

Stage technique, melodic lines, tricks, etc.

(3) I got a free t-shirt and a coupon to get a percentage off on my next purchase.

(4) most importantly I learned things about myself and my playing style that both does and doesn't fit the "guitar contest" mold. Most importantly, I've used my own rig SO long now that adapting to other equipment on short notice was NOT my strong suit the two times I tried it - I've since tried different permutations of my setup to get "good usable sounds" from the several rigs I have around the place in short order and gotten a lot better at it since then.

(5) I also learned that chops and licks are great and wonderful but what you SAY with them really separates the men from the boys. One of the finalists was a guy who had the stage presence of a disinterested octopus but his playing was very tasty. Another guy was a dude with a shred machine, an army jacket, jeans and his guitar and a small pedalboard. He tore that guitar up, he SMILED and you could tell he was enjoying every second of it and deserved to win that particular night. I suspect he had the exact same rig at home or something because his sound was just stellar. He dialed it in.

Now, don't count out the old guys:

I gotta tell you, one of the more memorable guys was an older dude. Now I'm in my forties but I'd say this guy was early to mid 50s.

But he taught EVERYONE a lot about stage presence.

He was dressed in a natty suit for one thing but he didn't look like he was playing wedding gigs - it was a sort of "blues approved" look. There's a fine line here and he had the right idea.

Next, his GUITAR dressed the part - he had the entire body of his strat wrapped in gold lame' wrapping paper, sealed, then had the surface of the wrapping paper dotted with rhinestones and crystals.

When the stage lights hit his guitar, the guitar reflected all over the room like a disco ball. This sounds like utter lunacy but it was brilliant. Not everyone is going to want to do that but it fit this guy perfectly.

He wasn't the most technical player I've ever heard, but he had a distinctive personality on the instrument and I talked to him after - his name was Harley (as in the motorcycle) and played in a band called "Beyond Beyond".

I've run into him a couple other times since then and he was going to try it again just to see how he did a year or two later.

Another one that was interesting was a kid with an acoustic guitar and a pedalboard with a ton of effects. I thought his playing was inspired and he used his effects like a musical instrument - I heard one of the judges say that he thought the kids guitar sounded "seasick". No accounting for taste.

I told the kid not to give up his unique approach - I could tell he was really upset but he definetely was more interesting than your usual average player and the only guy to use an acoustic that night.

The third time I was going to do it I was a "standby" since there were tons of folks there that night. Some guy wanders in with the EXACT same guitar with the exact same strap I'm using. I figured it was an omen and I was right - I didn't get to play since nobody cancelled. No problem.

The important thing I saw is that NOBODY was going to quit playing guitar because they didn't win or become a finalist at a contest, it was just something interesting and different to try.

Here's a pic of me doing the contest the first time I tried it:

I seriously think that need can be a dependency.

I played around removing the boogie from the equation and taking a regular

electric guitar into a TC electronic booster/line driver into a Roland JC120 to

see if I could get a decent sound.

I tried using similar setups just to see if I could get "my sound" without the

usual components that get that sound.

Played little games - I have a guitar, a stompbox or two and 2 minutes to

get a usable meat and potatoes guitar sound.

This also would come in handy for sitting in with other players using their

gear.
