Members ILikeGuitar
Just wondering what you guys like in a jazz box L5 type of guitar. I personally like both types. Each has its own nice sound. Do p90s make it noisy in a hollowbody though?
Members D Carroll
It depends if its going to have 1 or 2 pickups. If it just has a neck pup, I want it to be a humbucker, if it has both, p-90's.
Members Jim_Soloway
P90s can be very noisy and if you're planning to play jazz (or any other low volume music) with this archtop, then that can be a real problem. There are now hum-canceling P90's on the market and if that's the sound you really want, then I would strongly recommend checking out that alternative. Members Edward
I'd go p90s, but then I've long ago fallen out of love with HBs, so YMMV....
Members intern
What are some good jazz humbuckers or p90s? I have humbuckers in my hollow, but wanna try out p90s.
Members humbuckerstrat
I would think that good quality, wax potted humbuckers would be less prone to feedback at high gain than P-90s. But I've never tried P-90s, so I don't really know.
Members CanIBDom
What are some good jazz humbuckers or p90s? I have humbuckers in my hollow, but wanna try out p90s. I think there are really only 2 kinds of P90s--regular and overwound--and I would guess that hot wouldn't work too well for jazz.
Members Tidal Rhythm
I think P90s sound better in every guitar.

Members Verne Andru
After going through the same conundrum I installed a set of SD P-Rails so now I have both - plus a single coil rail.
Members guitarcapo
If it's humbuckers I often want a bright set like Duncan Seth Lovers or Gretsch Filtertrons. i often have trouble with pickups sounding muddy on hollow guitars. I think what hapens is that the pickup vibrates along with the top and that cancels out the higher frequencies due to phase cancelation. You basically have the pickup moving slightly in relation to the vibrating strings. Since both are moving, the higher frequencies get lost over a solid body. P-90's are great but yea...noisy. Members Elias Graves
For jazz sounds I prefer a mini hubucker or a P90. EG
