Honey is Cool...

So this is one of my favorite bands ever (can't you tell?) and honestly, given the bands most people talk about here, I don't know how many people here will like this music but hey whatever.

For most of you who are younger and keep up with what's cool to like and/or have art school friends, you have probably heard of The Knife and Fever Ray, and Karin Dreijer. The song "Heartbeats" is super famous and has even been featured in a Sony commercial, and Silent Shout was Pitchfork's best album of 2006, so it's not like Karin is under the radar or anything, and she's achieved all that with one of the weirdest voices in all of music.

But before she did any of that, she was the lead singer of this little rock band called Honey is Cool. This band just has what I love about music: character, dynamics, and melodies. I also love the way they arrange their guitar parts and how everything just has a good sense of timing, and how Karin's not afraid to feature her weirdness for all to see. Really, it has a lot of the same things that she would take into her electronic music later, including the nonsense lyrics, except everything seems a bit more immature, more spontaneous, more honest.

I warn you, Karin has the kind of voice that makes Bjork sound like Kelly Clarkson.

I only listened to the first track, because I could not bear to listen to the vocalist, but the band sounded surprisingly good. They reminded me of a combination of a forgotten '90s bands: Hum and Dambuilders ...

I quite like it. Her voice, I am sure, would get a bit annoying after a while... but it's the kind of thing I would have listened to a lot in my Uni days.

I seem to be discovering lots of new bands over the last couple of days - was browsing an album covers coffee book and came across Shoot, On the Frontier, so looked it up - v. nice stuff, but never re-released after the vinyl... just a few songs on youtube.
