Members Cliff Fiscal
Any thoughts on how to do this? a thin skin/natural Trans Walnut brown would be great, but I have no idea how to do it? Can I just stain an Alder body? I read it gets blotchy. Then keep it up with Tru-oil? A guy posted about using minwax prestain, minwax stain, and tung oil...... Members HanSolo
Use Minwax pre-conditioner before applying a penetrating stain. I have also had good success outing on a coat of sanding sealer first and then using a pimented wiping stain, wiping with the grain with a terry cloth towel to "grain"it. This works especially well when the wood is but ugly or has a serious grain mismatch but also creates a more opaque finish

Members Preacher
I've since taken better pictures but this is a body I did with transtint dyes and (at the time of this picture) a couple of coats of tru-oil. I used shellac (dewaxed!) cut with denatured alcohol as a base coat - it's harder to get deep colors as the wood cannot absorb as much dye but it also evens the tone out and reduces blotchiness. Though you can't really tell from the pic, in person it's not blotchy at all.

Members Cliff Fiscal
That looks nice, but I'm really hoping for something darker.
