Members claypoolfan Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 Has anyone had a chance to play one of these things yet? Lose 2 pounds(the preamp and actives) without compromising sound? The Lace Helix bass series comes in two choices with pickups that are suppose to have been made by the Gods. http://lacemusic.com/news/news_articles.php?articleID=13 The Lace Helix
Members lug Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 I suspect anyone who claims that the highs, the mids, and the lows are all "enhanced". I say relative to what?
Moderators ThudMaker Posted September 13, 2007 Moderators Posted September 13, 2007 I'm disappointed that the bolt-on doesn't have dual pickups like the neck thru. Stylistically, I really dig those basses. As far as the output being comparable to active preamps, Reverends have a pretty hot signal, as do some others, so I don't think the preamp would be necessary unless you really like tweaking your bass instead of your amp.

I thought they looked pretty cool too. I think the key to their claims is that the pickups react to current rather voltage. They claim this makes for a better broad-band response, through the MHz. Guess we'll have to wait 'till some of our members get to play one, to get the real low down.
Members bassred Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 Kinda ugly, but I like it... not a bad price either... I tend to adjust my active EQ and leave my bass amp flat, so I'm not sure where that would leave me....
Members Jazz Ad Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 I never wanted to compromise my sound with a preamp. These things are uglier than lug's sins.
Members Rippin' Robin Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 I never wanted to compromise my sound with a preamp. These things are uglier than lug's sins. +1. It's like someone took paint stripper to a luthite body....
Members lug Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 Did someone say "Lug" and "Sin" in the same sentence?
Members Super Bass Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 Seems to be all marketing crap, and bad stuff at that. The basses look ugly. One of my AP II SB's isn't active but it could fool you into thinking it was. Certainly fooled me, I looked for about 5 mins for the batteries...haha
Members Death Hands Posted September 13, 2007 Members Posted September 13, 2007 I do that constantly. It's called a Fender Jazz bass. {censored}ing rip.
Members claypoolfan Posted September 13, 2007 Author Members Posted September 13, 2007 These things are uglier than lug's sins.I wouldn't go that far but they do have a certain ugliness to them, but I kind of like it. I will say they look very egronomic.
Members Roger in the sky Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 A: what the hell is the deal with those knobs 2: the {censored}ing jack is on the BACK of the thing! D: ALUMMITONE? you name your pups ALUMITONE like "man that tone is so sweet just like......... ALUMINUM??????" E: why is the elec. cavity a triangle? 5: "3-way selector switches and a master switch for volume and tone" i only see one switch there, and what exactly does a volume switch do? G: why does the neck-thru have an extra cavity? my god i can't belive how angry this is making me..... must... look... away.....

Members Darkstorm Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 Loose two pounds by useing passive rather then active pups and eliminating the preamp, battery and active eq? Doesnt make sense that thered be significant weight diff between active and passive pups. And doesnt make sense that preamp would wiegh enough to be significant weight loss either. What're they useing concrete? Design wise isnt attractive to me. Reads more like smoke and mirrors advertising to me.
Members Deacon_blue Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 ...makes a Bongo look sexy.I can't decide which I dislike more, the headstock or the body. It probably sounds like a bass.
Members claypoolfan Posted September 14, 2007 Author Members Posted September 14, 2007 Beauty is in the eye of the bass holder. We'll have to give some time to find out about how it plays, sounds, holds up and hangs. None of the listed dealers are anywhere near me or I'd go play one just to check it out and see if it is what they claim.
