I'm OK with the top five, but Jamerson should be higher, and for me Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick. GREAT player and inventor of the 12 string bass.

 

I know, I know, many will disagree, but a list is just someone's opinion anyway.

 

Jaco is a great, but I don't listen. But is a HUGE influence, obviously.

Seriously - go take a listen to "I'm gonna make you love me" (Supremes) and figure out how much of a genius JJ was. the drop scale at the end of each different vocalists ( Wilson, Ross, Birdsong ) first verse IS the song. Nobody wrote that for him. He played it on the fly.

 

the pressure cooker conditions that made him so good (20+ hour sessions at Motown over a dozen+ years) dont exist anymore. it's not likely we'll see the likes of a player like that again.
