30-watt tube amp enough for gigging?

What's the problem with the gear you've been using? What do you mean showing it's age?

Heh, I was surprised to see this thread back on the front page. Anyway, what I mean is that some of my pedals and rack gear are old enough that parts and service simply are no longer available, and having bought most of them used, the relatively light wear and tear I put them through can't make up for years of possible (and probable) abuse by previous owners. The local shops I've talked to lack either the capability or interest to tackle repairs on some of the "shredder" gear that was so popular in the late `80s and early `90s, and I can't justify the expense of shipping this stuff who-knows-where to some kind of specialist sitting on a surplus of NOS components.

It all worked out in the long run. Since posting my original question, I have purchased a Peavey Classic 50/50 tube power amp that has proven to be just what I needed. It plays nice with pedals as well as other rack units, has presence and resonance controls if I need to make an adjustment without messing with my "perfect" EQ settings, and supports many different speaker arrangements. The Classic 30 head that I was considering is unfortunately not stereo and requires a 16-ohm load; all of my cabs are 4- or 8-ohm in mono, and I don't want to rewire them if I don't have to. I also bought a Boss ME-50 multi-effects pedal that contains virtually all of the functionality of my larger pedalboard or rack rigs, and sounds fantastic straight into the 50/50 power amp.

Sounds like you got a top notch rig put together!

I'm curious if you're a mind to get rid of some of the old broken down stuff. I might be interested.

I'm taking any of the currently "injured" gear in to a couple of shops for estimates first, but if I decide to get rid of anything, I'll let you know. One of the more interesting pieces is an ART DST Eighty/Eighty head, which is basically a solid state preamp and digital effects processor combined with a solid state power amp in a 2U rack unit. It was offered either like that or mounted in a Marshall-style head shell. I've owned two of them now, and both have developed problems within a short period of time. Really a shame too, because as SS amps go, they really are nice.
