Working on a new project... advice welcome!

So.. I didn't mention it here outright, but I'm putting together a new musical project. My current band is working 2-4 nights a week.. but the bassist and the other singer (that runs the band with me) both have no interest in doing the things we need to do to get corporate parties, weddings, bigger festivals, oddball promo gigs, and even colleges. I don't mean to drag anyone kicking and screaming into that.. so I'm working on another project who's focus will be on those events.

That said, I figure it can't hurt to ask the wise old owl that is the BWTB hivemind for ideas and assistance. Here's what I've got so far.

* 5 Piece band.. myself on male vocals and guitar, an attractive female with some TV acting experience as frontperson, a bassist with a music theory degree, a drummer who's done TV show theme songs and production music in addition to being with my current band for 2 years, and a keyboard player who can play guitar as well, and who's young and a bit inexperienced, but capable and hungry.. all in the 20-35 range.

* Contacts at many of the agencies in the area that book these types of events who seem eager for me to have a project that they can book. I've always had a lot of these connections, but I haven't generally had the type of project that they want to work with. This should be tailor made for that.

* An idea to split the band into four bands. By which I mean.. there's a 200-ish song songlist... but I plan on getting pictures, logos, and websites done for four different bands. The first is the main project, playing a wide range of music. The second a new country band, as there seems to be a lot of void for that type of band. The third is going to be a "Millenium" theme act.. playing stuff like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguelira, Ricky Martin, Sisqo, Jennifer Lopez, Eminem... 1999-ish to 2003-ish, as I feel like it would make for a very unique version of a party band. The last version is a band playing popular songs for movies, and dressing the part, wearing outfits from famous movie characters. I don't envision this as being a band that will work all the time, but I do see a speciality market for it, and think it would make decent money when it was booked.

* As mentioned above, a master songlist of 200 songs. I'm actually at 220 something, but I'm trying to trim it down to 200. The songlist is still a work in progress, and I'll post it below, if you actually care to read it.

So.. I need band names, for all four bands. I need songlist recommendations. I need any other advice or heads-up type things that you guys want to give me..

I'm excited about this, but I want to make sure it works and works well, which means asking you guys for advice. So, fire away!

I think they are all great ideas! I can see the Millennium band working in A list clubs- The clientele is the perfect age. They all will require some work but you seem like a guy who can get things done.

Based on what I've seen from you here, I'm sure you'll work hard at this project and it take off.  But splittng into FOUR bands seems like a lot of work.  I'll be very interested to see how it works!  Please keep us posted.   As far as the 4-bands themselves go?  Here's my take.  Just one man's opinion however.

The main band:  Sounds like you've already got this one figured out.

Modern Country band: duh.

2000-ish band:  My gut instinct is that it's still a bit early for 00s nostalgia.   Seems the 90s bands are just starting to kick in.   But, of course, will depend on market and audience.

Movie band:  Seems like a bit of a stretch to me.  A little TOO specific to a gimmick that really isn't about the music or a genre.  My drummer once had the same idea for a band he wanted to target to casino showrooms.  Dressing like movie characters might be cool though and add to it.   Again, the problem (in my view) is that it's potentially so broad musicially.  Most of the songs would have nothing common other than they were all used in a movie once.  But.....there ARE so many iconic songs associated with iconic movies, so....I certainly see why you think there's some potential there.

Good luck, man!  Sounds like fun all the way around!

I'd think in terms of sets with costume change rather than 4 different bands. Offer up a great nights entertainment along with an evolving look over the night. Friends and locals Rockola do this. A corporate oldies band, they have a costume change per set and do the decade to decade thing. It makes for big $$$ as the idea is very easy to sell and in turn very easy to focus on and maintain as a band.
