Carvin LS2153's Are they any good?

Well, the Peavey's were what we decided was the best passive 2x15 cabs under $1K.

Out of the JBL, Yamaha and other's we looked at, the Peavey SP's looked like the best for the money.

I know that the QSC, JBL, etc. powered cabs are tops, but nobody in the band is going to take out a loan for equipment. Plus we already have several power amps.

We also don't want "community property" so anything we get has to be within cash prices.

Basically we're going to have to go and make a trip to a few local Pro audio stores and let our ears decide what's best.

Anything can look good on paper, but I think our ears will tell us more.

Thanks again,

Another option might be a powered three-way like a QSC HPR153 or JBL PRX535.

Or you can just get some passive single 15's on poles like some MRX515's then get some subs later. PV SP's would work but they are rather heavy if I remember correctly.

How come no one ever recommends a Used Pair of EAW FRZ153's or FR159's?

Just wonderin'... About $600/enclosure.

I've wondered about the FR129Z's myself. Never see them mentioned around here. I'm guessing for the coin JBL and others must be superior. Anybody know how the entry level EAW's sound?

If you truly care about the sound then drop the notion of a double 15! As mentioned several times now, your budget just isn't big enough to get something worth a darn. You're spreading out your dollars on more drivers (so cheaper drivers) and "more" of all the stuff that makes a bigger cabinet. You want your dough in the drivers.

If you're stuck on cheap double 15's then there's really no need for further discussion as you're just looking for affirmation. While someone may come by and tell you how great their JBL JRX's sound "the regulars" here will continue to steer you away.

Dont be fooled by the JBL before the JRX. The JRX stuff is absolutely horrible. I have personally owned JRX stuff so I'm speaking from experience. I'm not knocking JBL as their high quality stuff is excellent. In fact, when I dumped my JRX stuff I got MRX and PRX. I'm very happy with my gear now and see no reason to move away from the system I have (with the exception of switching out my MRX518s for PRX518s to save some weight in my stage rack).

Where I live the only EAWs I ever see are KF boxes or line arrays. I own a NT system and I doubt there is another one in the state of Montana. It just doesn't seem like they are very popular other than the high -end market.

They sound great...I know a Couple crew around that use the FR's. I personally own a Pair of LA325's - That's a great sounding 2x15, but of course the weight trade off is huge. BUt since I'm a big guy, I can actually lift them onto the LA400 Subs I have. Most folks can't do that. So I understand the pull of a lightweight speaker like the MRX or PRX.

But in a Single 12" or 15" not sure that it matters as much. I just think the push and presence of the EAW's is worth going used.

I think we'll pretty much stick with the plan of 1X15's for now.

I rememeberd the outdoor gig we play each april for our church's school.

All we use are two 1X15 cabinets with all instruments, including the Roland TD-20 drums, though them and the mix sounds good and is more than loud enough.

Plus, when we can add subs next year when I get my bonus check.

Thanks for steering us clear of dropping the extra coin on the 2X15's. That would have been a costly mistake.

Thanks, Again!:thu:

Well in that case since you were gonna budget $700 per box for the SP4's anyway. I say go for a pair of JBL MRX515's. You won't regret it and you won't be replacing them next year. When bonus time comes get a pair of MRX518's.

I am a huge Yorkville fan and would put them up against anything in their price range. My friend runs a PA rental business and he mainly goes with Yorkville Elites because they are clear, loud and durable. He cant say as much for the mackie stuff he rents. Those single 15 inch Elites with 2 inch horns have plenty of punch and go down around to the 55hz range. They also can handle 800 watts continuous.

I have also heard a lot of good things about the JBL MRX line of cabinets.

Personally I think Carvin makes some pretty good stuff and gets a bad rap sometimes. I own two DCM1000 watt amps and powered head and two four string bass guitars and all work like a freaking champ for many years I also own Eden SWR and Euphonic. I can tell you for a fact the stuff is road worthy because I know two bands that use it at least twice a week for many years. I would love to listen to their TRX stuff.

The thing that would be a deal killer for me on any 2 x 15 is you cant pole mount it. I would want my rig scalable by adding subs for larger rooms and just using 1 x 15s for smaller stuff.

Carvin is mostly a leftover from the mailorder days before the Internet, when they had one of the best musicgearporn mags in the business.

Some of the better musicgearpr0n catalogs came from Music Emporium or Eastcoast Music Mall, especially those from the early 80s. They're one of the few catalogs I keep around. I mean how many music stores listed the super rare Marshall Time Modulator (no relation to Marshall amps) in their catalog...?
