I had an amp tech look over the output transformer today. He didn't find anything out of the ordinary. I think I may start looking for a better amplifier. I'm about to leave to check out a Rivera Era Champ II.

If the Champ II doesn't work out, I took the liberty of checking your local CraigsList based on the location in your profile. Any of these would be a possibility for gigging, maybe not so much for bedroom levels:

Traynor YCV80 $320 seattle.craigslist.org/est/msg/5720449085.html

Peavey ValveKing 212 $325 http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/msg/5717154248.html

Fender Hot Rod DeVille $400 http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/msd/5711291963.html

Mesa Subway Blues $450 http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/msg/5705937190.html

The Subway Blues is a very noisy amplifier - not suitable for recording - and it eats EL84 output tubes so you will have similar problems. That being said, I often play through one. It is great for getting a creamy thick overdriven sound with a Les Paul or a Telecaster but I don't believe it would be suitable for getting a clear sound out of a jazz box.

The Hot Rod Deville is big, bulky, loud and hissy but you may find the Fender Blues Deluxe suitable for a nice, warm, clean full bodied jazz sound.

I described the problem I was having and they said it wasn't microphonics but it was filament rattle. It sounds like the filament rattle from the speaker vibrations is causing a feedback effect.

This is one of the reasons I like heads more than combos.

You can move the head away from the speakers, even by several feet, if you want to.

My favourite amp of all time is the Yamaha DG80. It has all the advantages of a tube amp without the disadvantages. There is a good chance it will give you the clarity and warmth (without the muddy) that you are looking for.

Because it doesn't actually have tubes in it, the sound is always consistent and there is no risk of filament rattle.

If you can find one to try out, you may be able to get it at a reasonable price.

I wonder if one of these might work then:

Jet City JCA20H and JCA12S (1X12) "Half-Stack" - $300 http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/msg/5729321973.html

Jet City 20 Watt tube head and 2X15(?) cab - $440 http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/msg/5725977428.html
