seems like a Strat with warmer alnico mags would be perfect--esp if just
slightly
hotter than 50's specs.

The CUT control is your friend. Ditto the blendable normal channel.

what's the word on Strats thru AC-30's?

it's not one of the more traditional combinations.

or a Tele or JM for that matter....

I tried an AC30 (the CC1) for the first time on Monday on my amp shopping trip (looking for 1x12" combos). I grabbed an EJ strat for my testing, and it sounded really nice. Good pop on the clean, bright without being ear-piercing, and a nice crunchy breakup when I cranked the volume up. I like the Fender DRRI a little more and its also more portable but the AC30 + Strat sounded pretty damn good. I'd like to get one someday.

i am forever grateful.

the guy i bought it off of sold the hiwatt, as well as 20 other amps.......

With my AC15cc (with a Weber Blue Dog AlNiCo), I prefer my Epi Casino, Ric 610, Danelectro DC-12 and Gretsch Pro Jet - for some reason, all four of those guitars really shine through that amp. My strats and tele work well with it, but not to the almost magical degree those others do. I don't think I've even tried my Les Paul through it yet. :o

A gretsch with alnico trons through a slightly breaking-up AC-30 is a bee-yoo-tee-full thing.

These were the guitars that I immediately thought of.

But some of the best guitar tones on record are a Gibson SG into AC30 (Clapton solo on While My Guitar Gently Weeps and I do mean Clapton).

You would also have to say that a Guild, Burns, Custom Brian May Red Special sounds great through an AC30. If it didn't that's a bum guitar!

Being such a versatile amp, you'll get results with just about any guitar I'd imagine. As headlow said, the Normal channel loves single coils and with a treble booster it eats humbuckers too.

Top Boost channel can be tweaked to work with either and you always have the option to jumper/link channels and blend each to best suit your guitar's tone.

I've never experienced P90s into my Vox, but I'd be astonished to find the pairing to be anything less than stellar. Edge uses one of just about every guitar under the sun with his Vox's, Beatles used plenty, Rory Gallagher a couple, Brian May, Radiohead, Tom Petty, The Who, Yardbirds, Stones... do I need to continue?

Was he really playing through an AC30 on that song?

I'm about 90% sure that he did. When I saw the Fab Faux in NYC, the guitar player used a clone of the 60's Clapton Psychedelic SG into a AC30 and absolutely nailed it. Being a gear and tone snob I went in for the closer look. I'm pretty sure that the Beatles Recording book would back that up.
