The bass player in his band (not sure of his name, too lazy to Google) was amazing. I read an interview with Ian Dury a few years ago (in about 2000 IIRC). Not really and I think it was the start of their business plan for the next 30 years. Release album, tour relentlessly, release mediocre live album.
