Guitars

I play a Fender Custom Shop NOS Telecaster. This guitar was originally a NOS when it was purchased, but has been played extensively so there is lots of natural wear on the neck and a healthy amount of gunk and dents on the body. The nitrocellulose finish is very soft looking visually, and is fairly transparent showing the grain of the ash body very prominently. I string it with .009-.046 D'addario strings, use Ultex 1.0mm picks, and run the stock FCS neck and bridge pickups.

Other guitars include a Yamaha FG-411 12 string acoustic, strung with light gauge Martin strings. This guitar was my first to call my own, which my parents bought me when I was 10.

CS52Tele13.jpg

Strap

I use the Brown Deadstock Luggage Guitar Strap from Couch, ordered shorter than usual.

tn-brownluggage_03_LRG.JPG

Cables

All cables are Planet Waves, two Custom series from guitar to pedals and from pedals to amp, and a Cable Station kit to connect all pedals.

Effects

Digitech Whammy - I don't incorporate this pedal much into my rig, but when I do I usually keep it on the end.

Ernie Ball VP Jr. - Solid volume pedal used as a gain control for my dirt pedals. Tonally, backing up on the VP Jr. sounds a little different than rolling down my volume knob on my guitar. I believe it's due to the pot values in each.

Korg Pitchblack - This one is coming out of the "tuner out" on the Ernie Ball. It is usually always kept on, and I just back up on the VP Jr. to start tuning.

Electro-Harmonix HOG - I mainly use this pedal set to sound very Hammond B-3ish, and stick to the Freeze-Gliss mode to incorporate portamento between chords. I also always have the exp. reverse and spectral gate engaged.

Moog EP-2 - This expression pedal is connected to the HOG and is used to freeze chords in the heel position, and let the guitar signal through in the toe position.

Way Huge Swollen Pickle MKII - Fuzz based on a Big Muff, set to a very saturated yet midrange-heavy sound that sounds crossed between a Fuzzface and a Muff. Very crunchy when rolling down on the volume knob on the Tele, and stacks well for leads.

Pro-Co Vintage Rat - This pedal from the early 90's has been modded extensively, starting with the obvious additions of a "lube" knob (inverted treble/presence control to tame harshness) and 3-way toggle for different tonal options (to toggle between LM-308 ala Vintage Rat, clipping diodes ala Turbo Rat, and a boost setting). Other mods include new aluminum gunmetal knobs, sky blue LED, true bypass 3DPT switch, and a Boss 9VDC power socket attachment on the back.

Hardwire DL-8 - Current delay, usually set as to mimic an analog delay or as a phrase looper. Looking to sell this delay soon for an EHX Deluxe Memory Man.

Power to the pedals is provided by either their respective power adapters or via 9 volt batteries (for the Rat/Pitchblack).

Hog2.jpg

Amp

I play through a Vox AC30H2, the handwired 50th Anniversary model finished in cream tolex. The amp was retubed with Mullard EL84s approximately 8 months back, and lives in an Angstrom 3/4" ATA roadcase finished in standard black. Mainly I stick to the EF86 channel set to Pentode mode. I find the EL84 section has a bit more jangle to the high-end, while the EF86 has a more prominent midrange.

Vox2.jpg

I'm quite content with my guitar/amp combination, but do plan to get another electric in the near future. Prior to that however, I would like to finish up my pedal section with a DMM, Boss FRV-1, RC-20XL and OD-1, Drasp-modded DL-4 and Memphis Tremolo. Stick them on an ATA board with a tier set to the left, with a MXR/CAE Power Supply tucked under that.

Thanks to you I've got spooge all over my monitor. {censored}!!!

Guitars:

My main guitar is an '06 Mexican HSS strat. I have .10 D'addario XL or Ernie Ball regular Slinkys on it, depends what I'm in the mood for when I hit up the guitar store...

I blocked the trem since I never really used it and it did settle some stability issues. Thing never has tuning problems. I also rewired the middle tone knob so that it controls the bridge HB. Reason being is I hardly ever use the middle pickup, and when I did, the tone knob was on full anyway...it is a very useful mod for me. I might do some pup swaps in the nearish future, along with a few more customizations.

My other axes are all stock...

Epiphone Casino-this guitar has had nothing but Pyramid Gold flatwounds on it since the day it was bought, but since they're like quite expensive and hard to find (last time I had to import them for a hefty sum for strings), I need to find some new strings to put on this baby. Plays great though.

Epiphone Explorer-Ernie Ball Slinkys on it, doesnt get a whole buncha play time. Plays nicely, but the shape is awkward. Bought it as a newbie to the hobby. Got 2 stickers on it, one which I regret. They give it a personal touch I suppose though...

Epiphone Del Rey-Pretty sure this is out of production. It was my cousins, but he gave it to me. Great, great guitar. D'addario XL .10s on it.

Squire Strat-first evar guitar. ;)

Johnson Telecaster copy-This guitar is really heavy. It's like solid maple or something...for 100 bucks its a very nice guitar though. The weight is the only issue. D'addario XL .10 on this as well. I have a red/yellow/green strap for it, and I put on this really nice sticker that makes it look really classy in my opinion. It matches the strap. I like itt.

Alvarez Acoustic-I dont even know the model. I hardly ever play it. I need a good acoustic. I believe there are Fender acoustic strings on this now.

My pedalboard hasn't changed in like forever. I have more pedals than are on it, but I've kept the ones that are on it as my board for quite a few months now. First is the Boss RC-2 Loop Station. Great little practice tool, and fun for noodling. Also helps when writing.

Then comes the Ibanez DE-7, its my only delay so it's always set differently. Gets quite a bit of use. I've always been jealous of all the multiple delay boards or the DL-4 owners, but this suits me.

Next, my Boss CE-5. It really doesn't get enough use, but I keep it around for some reason. Every time I turn it on I know why though. It's a very versatile chorus and it's very pleasing to play with. I have it at about unity, maybe a bit boosted. It's normally at a slight shimmer just to make my tone nice, but for various purposes, the settings will change and range from intense pitch shifting and everything in between.

Next is my dirt section. First up is the Russian Big Muff. I've dreamt of owning this pedal since I saw it on my favorite guitar player's board. Lame I know, but I can never get myself to get rid of it. It's a great pedal. It's light in the mids, of course, but it's soo fat and booming. Great for the music I play. It's got a great bottom end for palm muting. I love playing bar chords with it. It's great for Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer/alternative type distortion. It's also great for leads, ESPECIALLY when I boost it with the BD-2. Truly amazing.

Then my go to dirt, the Boss BD-2. It's been a love hate relationship, but honestly, its like always love. I've been on and off on replacing this, modding it, but everytime I play it, I jujst can't bring myself to do it. It just sounds fine. It's extremely versatile and extremely dynamic. I keep the volume about unity. The tone is really shrill and actually can hurt if its too high. I useuall keep it around 11 oclock. Thats the sweet spot imo. As for gain, right at about 10/11 o clock is where it's most dynamic. I can use the guitar volume to clean up to a perfect clean, or have a really nice crunch when its maxed. When I want some real intense overdrive, the gain knob will be moved though. 99.6% of the time, its at this dynamic setting.

Then I have the MXR Dyna Comp. The only reason its on my board is I sometimes use comp, but it's mostly used as a clean boost. I have a Micro Amp, which I actually like more as a clean boost, but since I do occasionally use comp, I figure it kills two birds with one stone. The output is always between 3 oclock, which is about unity, and dimed. The sustain is always around 11 oclock, unless I need the compression. Very rarely, but it does somtimes occur, I'll dime the output and turn the sustain all the way down to use as a real clean boost.

Then the Fender PT-100 tuner, in silver. ;)

It tunes...

Then a Vox V-847A wah. I don't really use wah a whole bunch, but I guess enough to merit it to stay on the board.

I run this through a Fender Twin Reverb '65 Reissue. This is my dream amp. I love it so much, I can't see me ever parting with it. The cleans are amazing, it handles pedals extremely well. It's a classic. I can never pull a bad tone out of such an amp.

I probably actually would've went for a DRRI if it had been there, but it was this or a Super Reverb, and I went from this. Was not dissappointed, this amp is a beast. The volume hovers around a lot based on environment and situation. The treble is at about 5.5, 6. I love the highs. My mids are at like 7, 6.5. The treble used to be higher than the mids, but I've since changed that. And my bass is at like 4.5, 5. I can't stand a lot of low end, I dunno why. I've kept with the Groove Tube tubes, never found a problem with them. Stock speakers as well.

There, probably a bit too much information, but I liked geeking out.

The lists are cool, but how do you guys use the gear? what combos do you favor and that fun stuff?

Well I don't know about others here, but my combinations list would go on forever. Sometimes I run up to three different amps, each with seperate FX chains, sometimes I use one amp and no FX, it all depends on what I am looking for.

I don't even know where to begin with the combo's I use. I will try and get it all down, but it's gonna be a doozy.

Here we go.

Guitars

- AVRI Jazzmaster - Tuned to Eb with 11s, mastery bridge

- EBMM Steve Morse - Tuned to Eb with 11s, soon to have a complete electronics overhaul

I use the Jazzmaster for everything at this point, the EBMM just doesn't stand up to it soundwise, though it is the best playing guitar i've owned.

Amps

-Mesa/Boogie DC-5 into Avatar 2x12 (V30s) or Mesa 4x12

-Swart Atomic Space Tone

I'm not a big tube swapper, Mesa 6l6s in the Mesa and whatever the Swart site recommends for tubes (6V6s) in the AST.

I run two different setups: one for my solo/looping stuff and one for band practice/jam/shows.

Solo/Looping

Jazzmaster >

Dyna Comp > vintage CS-9 > DMM > DD-20 (used as a looper) > RV-3

Swart AST

I'd also like to start working my Electribe ER-1 into this setup.

Band Jam/Practice/Gigs

Jazzmaster >

Dyna Comp > Lovepedal White Dragon/Vintage Rat RI > Vintage CS-9 > modded Small Clone (for vibrato) > DMM > DD-20 w/ tap tempo >

Swart AST or Mesa DC-5

The Lovepedal is dirt when I use AST and the Rat is with the Mesa. Generally the AST does great for practices and gigs in smaller room, but sometimes I need the extra headroom of the Mesa for my delays.

I also have a Planetwaves tuner that I keep in my gig bag. I use whatever decent USA-made cable I find at local shops (Mogami Gold, Horizons, whatever) for leads and Dimarzio patch cables. Power comes from a combination of 1 spot and various adapters when I can't daisy chain (DMM, Lovepedal.) I currently use an old Pedaltrain JR for my pedals, though I'd like to get my bigger board I bought from Rondo back in use (carpet ripped away.)

Pedals I have been known to randomly throw on a board:

NYC Big Muff modded for a mids knob.

Silver Kiss Proto

Script Phase 90

Monsterpiece NPN

I also have a big dreadnought Ibanez Artwood acoustic which I love, but I rarely play these days.
