Members ben_allison
I love the bubbly synth intro Takk. Any ideas how one might recreate that with a guitar? I'm thinking maybe reverse delay > pitch shifter > phaser > delay? It's very ellusive...

Members ben_allison
Verbzilla and cello bow. I know that covers most of Sigur Ros' big tones. But the intro to the first song is clearly something else, most likely sampled (Jonsi loves making his own samples).
Members devonteran
this thread is relevant to my interests. could we start an official 'How did Sigur Ros do that?' thread?
Members ben_allison
90% of the time the answer is: - cello bow and gallons of verb (ams rmx16)- sampling odd things, especially children's toys- vocals with lots of processng

Members BHz_econo
i tried a cello and a violin bow on guitar, i just dont like it. Supposedly the trick is to use lots of rosin. I'm going to order a 1/8 size from wwbw for $25.00. I figure I'm not out much if it's terrible.
Members ben_allison
Cello bow on guitar takes a lot of rosin, and a lot of patience. And a lot of reverb. I've managed to make it work, but it really does take practice to get more than just screetching. It's a matter of finding the right touch. Members devonteran
using flatwound strings helps. I play bow on my guild archtop. It sounds pretty sweet. Lots of rosin is right too. I also run some beefy overdrive. I love the sounds. I think alot depends on the guitar you use. I've done it on my tele and hated it.
Members seifukusha
i had the rosin too. oh well, im getting into slide playing lately..on a firebird..
Members AnderMocs
to me it sounds like a sample of some strings, with reverb, and phase. and then it adds some singing. and then guitar and bass swells swells.

I'm thinking yes to the strings. Reverb for sure. It's just the "bubbly" effect that's confusing me. It's repeating at fast, regular intervals leading me to believe it's either a phaser, tremolo, delay, OR sample that they've sliced and looped, which is then feeding a fx chain. BTW, you owe me an M9.

The quickness is the string playing, they're bowing quickly. There is something whacky going on with it though. i remember offering one, i don't remember what for, and i was gonna tell you to fly down to florida to collect it off the stage at Bobby D's regular sunday gig. Members Sad Darwin
Sigur Ros....... easily my favorite band. And sorry, no ideas. Why? It's not guitar. It's a multi layered, percolating sound design, utilizing samples, synths, and clearly brass. It's not guitar though. Any attempt at mimicking it with guitar won't do it justice. The closest thing I can say for the shimmering part would be use high speed Trem and LFO's on a filter, to give it that ethereal, glassy, shimmer. Yeah, I was thinking something like a fast auto-way, but set to a higher resonant frequency would at least simulate that shimmer.
Members ben_allison
BTW, a very similar kind of sound/effect can be hear in Mum's, "Far Away Swimmingpool" from the album "Finally We Are No One." IGZChhXK1Ag Hear that quick, bubbly sound? It's very different from, but there are similarities to, the effect on the main synth part in this: 2yox_svhkP4
Members ben_allison
Here's another different-but-similar sound, staring at 1:03: pO007Bx1Uak In the Radiohead track, it's a harp. Hmm. Again, very different, but there's a similar quality that I can't put my finger on...
