Phil O'Keefe
Steel drums. I actually had the honor of recording a large steel drum based band from Trinidad and Tobago (where they were invented) once, as well as doing sound for a large audience concert with them. They're really a cool instrument, and when you have several of them - of various sizes - going together at once, it's pretty spectacular sounding. Nearly every keyboard ROMpler and MIDI module and soft synth has a steel drum sound or two in it. But it's not quite like hearing them in the room... Members inuitdream
Steel Drums! Heard em used by a band called Dambuilders on a song called Wished on the Wrong Star. I think its the best use of em in a rock song. YMMV.

Members MrChrisos
Hang drums are Swiss by origin, and only like a decade old. I do remember someone telling me they've stopped making them, but I'm sure the demand's there. A band that use them a lot as a central sound source is Portico Quartet (they got a mercury nomination last year, nice guys).
