Members AlexStec
I tend to associate chorus pedals with the sounds of the 80s.Is it so definitely dated ?Do you have any examples of a recent and creative use of that effect ?

It's common to use it as an invisible enhancer, ie you can't tell it's on in the mix. That and Tool. But yeah, it's generally amateur sounding IMO. Members tape
chrous is one effect I can only use subtely (as over-the-top my music tends to be). more of a stereo widener rather than actual audible swirlyness.
Members LowWoods
It takes great care when setting up a chorus, flanger or phaser. The big whooshes are overpowering - gotta learn to use them right!

Members TravvyBear
I use mine a ton now. I really like it, I have it set up pretty lush, but not overpowering in the mix.
Members Fender&EHX4ever
Do slapback delays always sound like the 50s?Do spring reverbs always sound like the 60s?Do phasers and wah always sound like the 70s?Do loopers and pitch shifters always sound like the 90s? I think these effects evoke the era that they were ubiquitous in, which I suppose makes them "dated." I often hear my wife use that word to describe music or film, and it often annoys me - not serious annoyance, but a slight nudge of annoyance. As if "modern" always equals better or fresher. Do you have any examples of a recent and creative use of that effect ? I'm more in the camp that flangers are so 1984. Used sparingly chorus = cool effect, not dated. I mean, it simulates two instruments doubled up... Here's a not so recent but not 80's use of it.
Members dcooper830
Chorus doesn't sound '80s to me. It just sounds like chorus.

Members Mr. Shankly
Lately I've been using chorus on drum machines, but not the 80s gated chorus I think the OP is talking about.
Members EL KABONG
I dont think my medusa sounds like 80's, it gives me a huge volume boost though. I used to have it on all the time. I am just now learning how to turn the chorus off for a while.
Members JRBain
Used well, no. Used in a certain way, definitely. If you use your bridge pickup, use a solid state clean (or otherwise overly 'sterile' and very clean) and arpeggiate basic chords, it sounds '80s' to me. Members Jarrizle
Make sure you use chorus on the slow parts...cause phaser on them just doesn't quite cut it.

Members TomCTC
CE-1 style chorus/vibrato thing works for me. 80s chorus is cheesy, I agree.
