Members samzadgan
I've never been a fan of Country music...but recently i saw a film called Songcatcher, and immediately i bought the soundtrack. I've been listening to the soundtrack...and i really like it! It's dark...sad...melancholic. Basically, everything i like in my music! So my question to country music experts: Is this type of country music a specific type of country music? are there artists who do this style more than other styles? Because i know nothing about the world of country music...i would really appreciate some direction as i start to discovering this new music. Members Eburst
Some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard is country. 'Pop' country is mostly crap, but even then there can be some ace guitar playin'. Toby Keith and Trace Adkins have some killer riffs. Brad Paisley is just sick, but some of his songs are too schmaltzy. Nashville has some great pickers, but it's a hit machine and I like my country gritty, sleazy and real.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6BJ2E8eKww
Members imbuedblue
IIRC, the stuff on that soundtrack is mostly traditional Appalachian folk music. Check out the old Smithsonian Folkways recordings. There's a lot of haunting stuff to discover. Wait until you hear the old murder ballads. Members dpizappi
I love Brad Paisley's lead tone. For OP I second both Townes and Hank.I don't know exactly what's on that soundtrack, but here's a few more recent suggestions:
Members TravvyBear
I just got really into Country music, and I have to say its my favorite genre by far. There is a lot of bull{censored} to wade through, but if you find a great country song/band/album you'll get hooked. Pretty much the purest music there is IMO. Spam: I have a Country/Shoegaze/Psychedelic EP I just did in my signature if you'd like to check it out. It's all Whiskeytown covers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwR1n0p1V7U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKBeylXcFHEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkztDzpTHKA

Good advice going back through old smithsonian recordings. there's another collection and the name escapes me right now but if i remember i'll come back and post it in here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKDJ5vFzqQM&feature=related

Members samzadgan
all this is really great...Townes Van Zandt is great...Steeldrivers and whiskeytown are really good too... i wonder how this will influence me while i'm writing riffs for my band...we play doom metal, so should make for an interesting mix! Yeah, I just looked the movie up (planning on watching it later), and what I saw on the soundtrack isn't really country music, it's old folk and bluegrass stuff. Another cool place to look for that stuff is the Lomax collection. If you're into that music, you'll probably like most country music made before the mid-70s and alt country. As far as artists go, here's someone that nobody's mentioned yet - Richard Buckner: [video=youtube;wFbnjsUcZ-M]

Members Eburst
I've been listening to Charlie Parr a lot lately. His brand of Country Blues has an air of authenticity missing from a lot of modern Country/Roots music.
