I am interested in swapping preamp tubes to try and get a sweeter sound with a litte more sparkle. Right now it is stock with 12ax7 pres and 6L6 power tubes. Suggestions? Members nakedzen Posted November 28, 2006 Members Share Posted November 28, 2006 Well, the at7's have less gain than the ax7's and the 7025 are supposed to be equal to the ax7's. The 12at7's work pretty well in the phase inverter slot. When I tried a JAN Philips 12at7 in my Cobra it changed the character of the amp. It didn't sound as aggressive anymore, more of a rock than a metal amp. This was a great way to get better mid-gain tones out of it. It didn't sound as organic as the 12ax7, though. You can't go wrong with the Tung-sol reissues. Fat and bright sounding tubes. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
