We had a laptop get hit with this. VERY Nasty stuff. Antivirus can not block things the user clicks INSTALL on. Many new viruses look EXACTLY like Windows type software, so know what you click on and what is fake that looks very real.

Macs are usually immune because not enough people use them for the coders to care.

Besides, this one was probably funded by Apple. Don't laugh, you don't know. :)

One of these days macs are going to start getting targeted more. Especially all of the older 10.4 and 10.5 systems that people don't upgrade because they're used for music or some other specialized use. Apple is supposedly trying to improve security a lot on 10.7, but 10.6 isn't really any more secure than Windows or Linux.

Macs will remain secure until hackers start using Macs... If I used a Mac, I wouldn't be losing too much sleep over viruses.

But PC people need to know about these fake "Antivirus viruses" and tell family and friends to NOT click on them when they pop up.

MANY get this stuff and never even realize it.

As a PC user for almost 3 decades, I've never lost sleep over viruses either.

Actually, hackers do use macs. They tend to still just target windows though. I'm on a mac right now, but I still use windows from time to time, it really just comes down to common sense about what you open. I'm not losing any sleep over viruses on either platform.

Most common viruses/malware/spyware cause certain behaviors on your PC which are easy to check but often hard to fix.

The most common things are:

1. System & program stability

2. System slowdown

3. Browser hijacked to launch certain pages, home page is changed

4. Antivirus/antimalware programs stop working

Number 4 is usually the sign of a serious infection. Sometimes you have to reload/reimage your system and hope your backup is good.

The best thing to do is have a decent antivirus program like AVG and one or two malware cleaners like Malwarebytes. Scans take hours, but you should run regular scans. If you do it overnight it won't waste your time.

yep. that laptop had it's TRENDMICRO, Mcafee, and Norton removed or killed by the virus. pretty ugly one. nothing runs on it now, easier to reinstall than fix

My biggest problem is my wife's computer. She will click on anything. Personally there are very few web sites that I use, besides this one, kvr, muffwiggler, gearslutz, YouTube, fb, and various instrument dev companies.

I have automatic scheduled scans and updates running on it and run periodic manual scans too using a couple of different antivirus and antispyware programs.

Sounds familiar. I improved our situation by restricting all our Win accounts to Standard User mode (mine included). Then you're prompted for the Admin password when most of the scumware tries to get in. My kids don't have the PW. My wife does, but after the total virus meltdown she allowed to happen a few years ago, she's now a sadder but wiser user.

ha ha thank you.

Most viruses are obtained either through kids or, sadly, women. When I was a computer tech, 9 times out of ten, virus removal was done because of kids that napstedred, kazzaed everything, went looking for free ring tones etc or wifes. moms, sharing all those chain letters and stuff or they fell for a fake email. Most of the guys went looking for porn or something

I don't need to, I use Linux on my day-to-day computer. I've got windows (yes, low-case letter) on my music computer (which isn't connected to the internet) because I need it for the programs I use, but I'm seriously considering upgrading to Studio Ubuntu. Linux isn't perfect, but it's better than windows in every way. Me and windows just don't get along. It was pre-installed on the computer I'm using now but the FIRST TIME I started it up it froze. Luckily, I was already going to install Linux on it so I just LOL'd it off.

I'm liking Chrome. Especially because I can decide which user accounts can have internet access (on my studio PC that would be me only). I have IE turned off.

That Studio Ubuntu looks interesting. If I was starting from scratch, I'd give it a try. If you try it please let us know how you like it. :thu:

I do, and I don't. I got the wife to make the switch a couple of years ago (her Windows laptop was a constant mess of malware). My son decided to dump Windows last year, and my daughter's next laptop will be a Mac.

I don't know why Macs aren't targeted with viruses and malware and all that crap, but for years people have been saying it was going to happen sooner or later, and they're still saying it. And every single one of our Macs remain either ignored or immune.

I hope that Steve Jobs and company continue to keep Macs safe from such stupidity. Apple's market cap, $317 billion vs Microsoft's relatively paltry $214 billion, partly depends upon it.

As someone pointed out already, the main reason Macs are "immune" is because they don't have nearly the market share that Windows has. Why spend your hacking effort to exploit 10% of all PC's when you could spend the same amount of effort and exploit 90% of all PCs?

Of course, I'm finding that I run Ubuntu more often than not now.

Well then, I promise to give a review of Ubuntu Studio if/when I install it (it's a lot of effort, y'all probably have to hope that my HDD will crap out on me again... lol).

Since Mac OS is *nix based just like Linux, it won't allow the computer to do anything without your consent. Heck, my current Linux distro won't even let me TURN OFF the computer unless I type in the password (you still have to rely on your common sense when it comes to installing software, though...). I've been using Linux since five years back and I've never had a major dick-out. With windows I had to re-format every six months or so.

Then again, don't take my word for any of this. I'm not a nerd, these things are just what I've heard and I'm talking from my own experience (I might just be very lucky with *nix/unlucky with windows).

Because Apple keeps all the coders busy by paying them to write Windows viruses. And also pays them with free macs

Personally, I've never really bought into this explanation. I would think there would be at least one master hacker out there that would love to tear up the Mac world just for the sake of doing so, and to prove that it could be done. PC hackers are a dime a dozen, but a virus that attacked Macs would make world news. In terms of market cap, Apple is the second largest company in the world - only Exxon is worth more. Apple sounds like a very attractive target to me, if I wanted to wreak some havoc and grab some headlines. Yet nothing to date.

Truth is, no one cares about macs

Why attack a 2nd grade computer :cop: The hacker that does that is going to be looked down upon.
