Members bob the dentist
Alright, so my 5150 II doesn't make sound anymore. It turns on just fine, the green and red lights on the front panel come on, so I'm fairly certain it isn't a fuse or something. However, none of the tubes glow at all, even when the front lights are on. This leads me to believe that I need new tubes, but is there any way that i can tell for sure which tubes are burnt out? I don't mind replacing all of them but theres no point replacing tubes that are still working :poke:

Members bob the dentist
hahaha my music isn't that bad I just opened it up to look at the preamp tubes, and none of them are glowing either, and i honestly can't believe that every single tube in my amp is burned out, so unless they aren't supposed to, then in that case go ahead and facepalm all over this n00b

Members OverDriven
NONE of the tubes light up? That might be something other than bad tubes. You aren't even getting power to the heaters in that case. I don't know if the tube's heaters are wired in parallel or series. If it's in series, then a tube with a bad heater COULD be causing it. If they are in parallel, then you are having a power supply problem.
Members knucklefux
i believe there's a fuse inside the amp that lets go that runs the filaments. either that, or you need a new PT:idk:
Members bob the dentist
ALRIGHT i replaced a fuse and now 4 of the pre-amp tubes glow, but none of the power amp tubes. if the pre-amp tubes aren't all glowing, would that make the power tubes not work? Did you look for another fuse inside for the rest of the heaters?
Members knucklefux
i don't think the heaters are wired in series in that amp, so no. there might be more than one fuse. i guess you could have a burnt trace as well. also, i sometimes can't see a preamp tube light up:idk:
Members Dale_M
Maybe you have another blown fuse? Not sure, but a blown fuse is usually an indicator of a problem.
Members bob the dentist
yeah i'm taking the headshell off and stuff right now, i just wanted to know if only 4 preamp tubes = no power amp tubes
Members bob the dentist
alright so it wasnt the fuse on the outside, i replaced it before checking the preamp tubes and i just swapped the old one back in, and the same tubes power up. tried to get the headshell off to check the other fuses Result: 8 stripped screws
Members 496dart
yes those heaters are series. check the fuses on the board edit--just pull the 4 rubber feet to open it--howd you strip 8 screws ??

Members 496dart
bob-- pull the back panel --4 screws. then pull the rubber feet --4 screws. thats it. sometimes those amps are hard to get out of the head case--use creative force. Members nwright
there are a few internal fuses, so I bet it's one of those...Same thing happened to me when a power tube went south. New fuses, new tubes, good to go. Hopefully it's that way for you, too.
Members JerryP
The preamp tube heaters are in series, the power tubes are not. The preamp tube heaters are D/C voltage, the PI and power tubes are A/C voltage. The most common cause for what you describe is a blown internal fuse caused by a shorted power tube. A new set of power tubes and a fuse and you're back in business. There is a ribbon cable that connects the power amp board to the main board that can burn up that can also cause that problem too.
