but the biggest thing is to never be too obsessed with one particualr amp.

some of those dudes are so obsessive over so many insignificant little details, that they turn into greedy, dishonast, gear whores.

its {censored}ed up. i can't even think of these people as musicians anymore at that point.

its like they are all trying to buy intenet bragging points by having the perfect rig with all the matching hardwoods, colors, etc.

I laugh because it is TRUE! :thu:

I think I joined the Boogie Board around the same time as I registered to Harmony Central. And every time I go there, the obsessiveness that you wrote about annoys me so much I don't even care to go there anymore. Who gives a flying {censored}- if you like your amp then cool, go ahead and like it. Sure enough HCAF has a bit of a e-penis thing going on, but in general it is nicely much more open-minded, at least in comparison to the Boogie Board. Heck I even like TGP sometimes more than the Boogie Board... :o

Yep, I'm damn proud of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. I wouldn't sell it if I was dying from terminal cancer. But from just playing around and trying different amps, as I've always done (the first valve amp I played was a Vox AC30, the first amp of any kind was an old Rockman headphone amp at high school).
I can focus away from it and enjoy other gear too, rather than just over-examine all the intricate details of my MarkIV and then argue about them at the Boogie Board. Heck I even like the Recto now and I used to hate it religiously. In fact I don't even mind just plugging into an old Boss G5 and run it to some $60 headphones or the computer with a overdone 5150 EVH-effected patch and jam until the sun comes up, which I do sometimes.

I like the technicalities of amps & guitar sounds and what my gear can do and all the extra stuff etc., but at the end of the day I just love making music, so instead of getting caught up in that {censored} just rock out having fun :rawk::thu:

Good on you Jim for writing this thread. Thanks mate. :)

I agree. I find the Boogie Board a little "stuffy", but there are some guys on there that know their stuff. For the remainder of the members, it seems like there is a little too much cork-sniffery. I can't handle it for too long. It almost seems like there are 3 types of members there...

5% amp technicians.

25% guitar players.

70% collectors.

I used to visit it pretty often 3 or 4 years ago, when I had my first boogie. It was a lot smaller at that time and not a lot of crap yet. A lot of things were discovered in that period by the masses, like the Mark IV A versus B stuff.

It was useful to learn about the different boogies, and I know a lot now, also because of my own gearwhoring. I visit it once a month now to see if there's some news on the mesa front, but I ignore most posts. Lots of crap now.

I love my Mark IV as well, but since it's not made of Bubinga or some other endangered wood species I guess it doesn't sound as good.

I don't know
, the older 2 channel ones, Rev F?

But revision F, isn't as good as revision C, because everyone knows that when Mesa/Boogie tries to "improve" their amps with "revisons" they are always, always, always, worse...

...unless the cabs are made of Imbuya. :thu:

I have learned alot from TBB, but it seems so petty these days. The focus has changed from guitar players trying to get the most from their gear, to "antique-road-show" (there are a few exceptions). I feel out of place there because I am happy with what I have, and my amp didn't cost $3K.

Everytime I see someone complaining about another board, (Boogie or TGP for example), I dunno, it seems the same complaints could be made about this place.

I think a lot of boards have a similar attitude by *some* members, the only thing that's different is the brands of gear.

At least people like that are fun to {censored} with. If they are willing to sacrifice their first born for their rig, perhaps its best they keep to themselves. I have found it useful for information, thats about it. I try not to pay too much attention to anyone who spends more time hanging out and talking about playing music, than actually playing music.

specialists are always neuroids.. the more stuff an amp does, the more you split hairs between two barely audible options. i've found way too many mesa people WAY too neurotic about control above anything..

i'm sure randall smith was trying his damnedest to cater to players-- really-- but he seems to've spawned a bit of a cult of the impertinent in a lot of instances. there's good in them-- but by and large-- i think they attract a certain audience and you're running headlong into it.

I am probably one of the guys you are thinking of with the matching hardwood rigs on TBB....ill admit it,

I bought it for my own enjoyment why does it have to be anything more than that?.

I own and farm almost 3000 acres, and i am a professional machinist with a machine shop on my farm. I make a lot more than the average person. I'm not saying it to brag i'm just pointing out that not everyone has to sell their first born child to get a nice rig. if you made hundreds of thousands in a year you would buy whatever you wanted.not for internet bragging rights but because you can easily afford it so why buy a black tolex one when a nice hardwood cab sounds better?

I bought my rig because I can afford it and I make precision things by hand machining so I can appreciate the craftsmanship and skill of a finely crafted instrument....so why does it make me a lesser musician to have done well and enjoy fine things? so only "true" musicians play MIM strats? I'm not trying to be a douchbag,
