Life Dilemma? Go to HCAF

Well I really do have one.

Do I quit my union job where I am guaranteed 40 hours of work a week at $20/hour OR do I quit school?

I'm about a year (hopefully) away from a bachelors in bio, where I would then look to get into a physicians assistant program or med school. Leaning towards the pa program.

I'm a doorman on 5th avenue with a friday-Tuesday, 2:30-10:30 shift. It takes about 3 hours of my day to get to and from work. I can't study or do homework while at my job. However, at christmas time I'm looking at $5,000-$7,000 in tips. I tried switching with some co-workers, but my boss said no.

I have bartending experience and my EMT license to fall back on.

I'm a very big crossroad in my life HCAF.

What would you do?

I worked valet and door for 4years or so while in university...saw a LOT of people get stuck in that life, and honestly it just doesn't look fulfilling in the slightest.

The money is good for a younger guy, but nothing great, and i don't think the doorman/valet that were 30+ and had been there 10+ years were really that happy with their lives.

Depends on what kind of person you are. I decided i wanted to pursue a career so I am on my way to becoming a commercial broker, and may even get into financial advising with morgan stanley smith barney in the future.

Think about what will make you happy...because one day you will inevitably wake up as a 40+ yr old guy, hopefully happily married with a kid or 2. Do you want to be living that life on doormans' pay? Do you want to be living that life period?

There's no way to know how things will work out, but honestly I would rather take risks and shoot for the stars than get stuck and have the hotel business be the height of my life's achievements.

I assume as a doorman in NYC you have the potential to be making....hmm...60k/yr? Just guessing...I know one of our doorman at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, CA claims to make 100k/yr, which is somewhat believable seeing some of the nights he has had.

100k/yr on door is rather rare, at least IMO. 60k/yr is doable...but think about this. I was started at 50k/yr as a researcher at the company I just got hired at. In a year I will be picked up by a team of brokers and start working on commission. I don't know if making good money is even part of your decision making, but I am only 22 years old I will likely be doubling your salary within a year or 2.. with no boundaries whatsoever on growth.

There is really only so much success/monetary gains you can have on door, and if you want to be a successful individual and really work hard to make a great lifestyle for not only yourself but your hypothetical family, door is not the place to do it.

I'd pretty much have to sell all my gear.

A) I'm not in a band

B) ... gonna need the money.

Nothing I know of pays this well for a kid with a hs diploma.. except porn.

I basically have to decide within the week.

What I would do would be finish off the bio program and take a few finance courses along the way and try to get into a life sciences/healthcare investment banking group and eventually into a venture capital firm...but that's just me

The big question is what do you want out of your job. Do you want something that gets you by (so you can play guitar, etc.) or do you really want to make it your primary focus (a true career)?

$20/hr at 40 hrs per week is ok money for a young single guy but you'll be making about the same amount for the rest of your life if you stick with the same job. Your experience is essentially worthless as a doorman (maybe helpful when it comes to tips).

As nvrnaka said, shoot for the stars. I wouldn't pick something that limits my upside. However, that should be based on what fits your personality best and makes the most sense based on life experiences. If things don't work out that well, you'll still have some college bio experience and with your EMT license that could serve as a solid fallback option.

College degrees are HIGHLY over rated.

You should do some research. Consider how much money you will make with a degree vs how much without it. Also factor in any debt you have to incur to finish school as well as the money you will lose by not earning money at your current job. People always say things like "Individuals with college degrees will earn $1,000,000 more in their lives than individuals with only a high school diploma." You should do a little reading before buying into that crap.

A college degree doesn't guarantee you anything. There are thousands upon thousands of individuals out there with college degrees that don't have jobs. You might get your degree and end up taking a job making less than what you make now in a field completely unrelated to your major

The necessity of a college degree is one of the biggest myths perpetuated upon the young people of this country. The educations that most receive are a joke anyway.

If I could cash in my degrees right now for all the money I have invested and a $20/hr job, I wouldn't think twice about it.

All that said, you only have one year left. If there is anyway at all that it is possible, I'd figure out a way to do both and make it work. It will most likely be horrible, but suck it up and get it done.

Am I bitter? Maybe a little.

hehe! well so far I'm finishing my own last year at uni, but for the other 3 years, I did about 25 hours of contact time a week at uni. 15 - 20 a week part time and still managed to make my band work and we are now gearing up to do some touring/ release album on a label Janurary next year...

When there's a will, there's ALWAYS a way man! Trust me. But only do it if you love it :) Oh... and I've been with my girl for over 2 years amongst this mess too :) YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :p

{censored}ing doorman dude. Thats a "transition" job. I rather work at half that salary doing something I like. Go to school, enjoy all the young vag, parties and knowledge. Find yourself a job that works better with your school schedule.

Your talking like this job is the greatest thing since bread... Its not the end of the world if you leave. You dont have a future there. You're rotting away there.

EDIT: $20 an hour is are good salary, but it IS possible to find other jobs that pay as as much or more in your field.

This.

I know tons of people with degrees that dont do {censored} with them. Meanwhile they are paying off student loans for the rest of their lives.

Talk to some PA's and see how they feel about their jobs.

Managed care and the like have been taking their toll for a while now.

There are some who work more and more and make less every year.

There might be others who have better experiences though :idk:

Education can be good, don't get me wrong, but it's not the end-all be-all that the universities want you to believe it is. It's not a golden ticket and doesn't guarantee you anything.
