Here are Brian Krashpad's standard Rules of Thumb for good deals:

NEW: 50% or more off list is a good deal.

USED: 50% or more off "street" is a good deal.

Obviously, condition, case & other extras/upgrades figure in as well, but that's a good rough guide. Not applicable to vintage/collectibles, obviously.

It's too vague a question - like asking, "How much is a car?"

List would have no bearing on a 1958 LP, mint, or a 1959 Strat, mint. Nor would it mean anything toward a 2002 Epiphone Casino, pickups swapped, repainted and burned, routed for a Floyd, and with a serious headstock repair.

Best thing to do is check past and present auctions on eBay, used dealers, etc. and get a feel for the going range.

It depends on the item - I generally figure 66% of the retail price. But some guitars (Hamer, for example) sell for less than half the retail price. I paid $1250 for my Monaco Superpro. It sells new for over $2800.

For popular items, I'll figure up to 75% of the retail street price is OK. I've been watching Mesa Boogie Lonestar Specials go for nearly the new price for months. So 75% for one of those amps would actually be a very good price right now.

Some items that have a long wait can fetch as much as retail. Such is the case with Harmonic Design pickups.
