Members RogerF
As to jj's question, and there is no way to quantify it, my gut sense is that it would have to be The Beatles. According to Wikipedia: "During the week of 4 April 1964, The Beatles held twelve positions on Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, including the top five positions, which has never been accomplished by any other band or artist to date." That achievement is mind-boggling and speaks to itself as the most reasonable explanation for the popularity of the electric guitar.
Members The Bear
The Beatles and The Stones. Then I would say Hendrix , Clapton & can't forget Santana.

Members valentsgrif
Beatles were a big influence, but I recall that for the first several years the Beatles were primarily a chick band. The chick factor may have inspired horny guys to wanna play, but in reality it was the girls that inspired the guys to play and not any certain sound or guitar virtuosity. I still say it was the early gutar heroes: Ventures, Clapton, Page, Hendrix that directly, via the music, inspired the trip to Sears.
