Progressive Rock

I'm in the mood for some new progressive rock. I listen to Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant, tons of instrumental music. What new progressive bands are worth checking out? Any suggestions on obscure progessive stuff from the past? Help me out, I'm going on an Itunes buying spree.

Try Carptree "Man made machine" think early genesis Tresspass era. Porcupine Tree "Deadwing", (or any of the other bazillion albums by them). I'm an old Prog fan and both of these work for me.

 

Also Sieges Even "Paramount" is good

From the Itunes samples, I think that I'm going to love them, however, I think that I'm going to like Porcupine Tree the most.

Out of Kalebmation's list some groups stand out more than others, Van Der Graaf Generator are really fantastic, especially H to He Who Am The Only One. Not the happiest music ever but that is part of their appeal. Camel are more straightforward but sweet, it is impossible not to like them really. King Crimson pretty much defined the genre and we all know what the deal is with them. The rest are just refinements of the concepts laid out by the pioneers. A friend of mine is a prog rock affiocando, he must have at least 1,000 albums of obscure prog rock from both sides of the pond although mostly European from countries like Italy, France, Germany and Holland ( Focus anyone? ). Too bad we are thousand miles away now so I can't just browse his collection and give any recommendations, I can barely remember the names of the bands anymore.

 

Ozric Tentacles are nice and they give damn good live shows too!

Anglagard. Anything by Anglagard. Astonishing band.

The live boot of their reunion show was one of the best live sets I've ever heard.

 

Anything by Happy Family (Japanese Zeuhl) on Cuneiform. A personal favorite.

 

Obscure stuff from the past? How about Arti + Mestieri? At their best, it's like

a fusion amalgam of the best Zappa instrumental stuff with the best Mahavishnu.

Fantastic. And the drummer, Furio Charico is an absolute, fire breathing, wall

shaking monster. Even today he's amazing - there are videos of him on youtube

and you just wonder how he does it. I always wondered why he didn't get famous

since he was every inch the equal of Bill Bruford, Chad Wackerman, Vinnie Colauita,

Virgil Donati, etcetera.

 

Terje Rypdal is a personal favorite too - his late 70s to mid 80s ECM work is some

of the best ever, he later got more aggressive and rock-like but is still excellent

and did some solo records with Ronni LeTekro worth checking out if you like

instrumental rock with a fusion edge..

 

I've got an absurdly huge collection so if you mention stuff you like down to

specific tracks I can probably find a band that has a similar feel/sound.

 

Don't forget Shicke, Fuhrs and Frohling - astonishing german trio.

If you like it a little heavier and stranger -- Voivod from the Dimension Hatross album up through The Outer Limits with emphasis on Dimension Hatross and Nothingface. Angel Rat and Outer Limits are more accessible but not as good. Go back further and you get into industrial thrash and not as good. Quite a variety of videos:

Well I will give a vote for the Flower Kings and Marillion. Another band is Transatlantic which has members of the Flower Kings and Marrillion and Dream Theater along with Spocks beard. Another option is Fish (spelled with an F) that is a band formed by the former lead singer of Marrillion.

 

Just to show how all the bands are related like the old prog bands are. Tony Levin played for King Krimson and pink Floyd and Anderson Wakeman Bruford and Howe.

One old/obscure band that I used to listen to in the past was PFM (Italian prog). Recommended.

 

Also, if you are interested in the intersection between classical and popular, you may want to check out the Claude Bolling albums (the one with Rampal is my favorite).

Theres a double CD called A History of Progressive Rock that I bought some years ago that has a couple of songs of each of those last few bands , really sparked my interest in Prog Rock .

But bands like Focus , Yes , Mahavishnu Orchestra , ELP & Horslips got me intersted in the first place .

I'd give Yes the grand master champion prog rock award. IMO they were far and away the best at the genre.
