I played my BIL's mint pre CBS Strat (circa '65) a while back. He has had it since new and it is mint. Honestly, I was not all that impressed by the sound. I put a set of strings on it for him (he hasn't played in years) and it was noisey and much less lively sounding than new models. Sounded more like an Affinity Strat than a Fender. Unlike fine wine (and middle aged men!) older doesn't necessaily mean better.

I own a '63 SG Special that I bought because it was offered to me for way below what it was worth. It's a really nice comfortable guitar to play but it really doesn't sound any different to a lot of much younger Gibsons and my Greco SG. The downside to owning a really old guitar is that it is valuable, and probably a little fragile, so I'm never as comfortable with it as I am playing my Greco.
