  • Here are the photos, Linus.

    Sorry about the delay.

Couldn't use the flash this close, kept washing everything out.

I guess they are a bit dark due to being so extremely close for the shot.

I'm setting the guitar up now for the router work to clean up the old kahler rout.

Back with some shots of that soon.

    • Pretty ragged...sides & bottom.

Took some measurments & laid them out on a piece of plywood which will be the template that the router guide bearing rides on.

Hogged it out with a big drill bit & cleaned it up on the spindle sander.

As soon as I get the edges of the plywood stabalized on some blocks & clamped down I'll make quick work of the clean-up.

      Back in a bit.

      • Man, I thought mine looked bad. At least the guy who did mine scribed a layout on it before he whittled away at it.

This is what I've been waiting for. Woohoo!

That template looks exactly like what I had in mind to dress mine up.

        • This is the way it should look.

Just nicked into the bore for the tailpiece anchors, but had to get it all cleaned up with straight lines for ease of fitting the plug.

Will use the router template for a tracing pattern for the maple plug.

No more than I intruded on it, I don't thing that will be necessary.

Once I get the plug in place in the route, I'll use a curved chissel/gouge to clean up the side of the bore.

much better, meandi! how will you adhere the plug to the body? probably a dumb question, but is there any chance the plug will shift or settle over time, or are you going to fit the plug super-tight into the top?

i'm fascinated by what's coming next in this project

I'll use titebond for the glue work.

Titebond doesn't seem to shrink much after it cures, so once everythings in place, there should be no shifting or settling.

It will be fitted snugly into place...I want all of the seams to be as fine as possible.

Yes, now we're getting into what initiated the thread initially...the finish.

                            • Just be careful with that plug. Give it a couple weeks to settle minimum (I would wait a month). I have made the mistake twice of thinking all is well with a plug and of course, on both you can now see the edges of the plug. I know it's a pain to wait and everyone is anxious, but I have learned this lesson 2 too many times

Edit: Even if the block remains stable, your filler may settle (this is actually what happened in both my cases). Both epoxy and bondo have failed me. And I have yet to find a wood putty that works as well as either of those 2.
