  • Beautiful inlay work! I imagine it was terrifying to use that inlay saw.

          • You know what scares me.

That this may just end up being THE nicest Les Paul on the planet, and I'm never gonna own it, or anything like it.

With the amount of fine work and attention to detail this baby has had, it must have a million bucks worth of care put into it.

            A special guitar indeed.

Maby GD will let you play it if you two can get together some time.

Glad to be able to share!

Where are you hanging out these days?

Haven't seen you around as much lately...maby I'm just not online at the same time.

                  ----------------------------

I purchased two sized downcut bits, 3/32 & 1/8, for this procedure.

I'm going to use the 1/8 for it, as it's slightly larger than the work piece.

Both of my reference books on inlay, indicate that a slight cushion of epoxy material should surround the actual inlay, so the 1/8 bit will provide that.

I've left the pattern piece glued to the new work for additional strength at this point.

I think I'll leave it this way until all router work & trial fitting is completed.

Clamped securly in place for marking with the steel scribe.

I'll do as many practice runs as necessary to get a feel for the procedure & provide an accurate recess for the inlay.

If I need more contrast in order to see the work, I'll cruise out to the hobby lobby arts/craft store & get some white water based tempra paint to brush on for a background on which to work.

                    Thanks.

It was a little nerve wracking in the beginning.

After I got a feel for it, just a matter of staying with it, as it's pretty slow, tedious work.

CNC guided lazer is my understanding.

Which raises the question, wonder how many people they had just cutting pearl to keep up with production in the old days, pre CNC?

I'm sure that with practice I could do it more quickly than I cut this piece, but still...kind of a time consuming process.

In our lab we just laser cut the inlay, then go back and laser cut the part and dab a little glue in a voila! done.

No, I have been kinda off line & trying new forums here and there but my main hang out is still mark wein's place. Wife is graduating and I have finals and it's the end of the school year for the kiddos so we have been super busy, also playing in a band and lots of May parties...crazy month!

It is strange how forum homeless I feel these days...now I check through four different forums to talk to a small fraction of the people I was keeping up with here. Thank Alah for a familiar thread like this one to keep coming back to.

I remember how busy it use to get when the kids were younger.

                              Enjoy your gigs!
