Members Chris Loeffler
... for a typical bar band setup?
Members stevegarris
Today you can do LED for incredibly cheap. I work as a sound tech at a club that has a bunch of these $20 lights, all DMX wired to a Chauvet Obey 80: http://www.ebay.com/itm/18W-6-Channel-RGB-Led-Flat-Par-Light-for-Club-DJ-Stage-Party-w-DMX-Control-/281631953505?afsrc=1&rmvSB=true I've also used these MCM lights, which have the quad LED's for a much better look: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/LEDJ-LEDJ59B-/555-27075 Beyond that, you'll need light stands, cables, and perhaps cases. You'll need to spend some time learning and programming DMX. My personal rig is a more simple solution. I have a single T-Bar stand with a light bar on top, and 4 Par LED's hanging below, all running a sound activated show (no controller). My front spots are Par 38's, with 70 Watt flood bulbs in them, mounted to the fly points on my speakers. I turn them off & on with a cheap IR remote (they plug into the receiver device). Members RoadRanger
You can easily have something usable for under $100. I like to mount a couple $12 LED floods (one red and one blue - or one yellow/amber and one RBG color changing) : http://www.ebay.com/itm/381442568402 on the top hang points of my mains and use a couple of them $20 thing mentioned above on the floor pointing up at the banner or back wall. Add a couple $8 rotating fixtures to light the ceiling and/or dance floor if you want to be fancy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/161811338174
Members stevegarris
All pictures here are with fog. The bright purple lights above the singer and bass player are the MCM's I linked above. I'm running them on a DMX controller but they look great on their "sound active" mode. The 3 purple and 3 blue lights on the left are the $20 eBay fixtures in the link above.
Members stevegarris
Here, the 3 purple and 3 blue in back are the eBay lights, green on right is MCM. You can also see my simple light bar behind the drummer - which runs in "sound mode".
Members stevegarris
Here we have the MCM lights above the singer, the green & purple lights are the eBay, and the 4 white spot beams are a Chauvet 4-Play on its brightest setting. Members stevegarris
In all of the above pic's, the front wash is from the same eBay lights, mixed to a white color at very low intensity (on purpose). We're a bunch of old guys wearing wigs, so we don't want too much front lighting.
Members StratGuy22
Nice. My wash lights are similar to the MCM lights. They are Blizzard 3NX which is an RGB fixture. I have 11 on a 16' truss and it's controlled by a software/hardware solution called DMXIS. I use 11 so when I alternate colors there's one light in the middle. Then I use a Blizzard Hotbox RGBAW or 2 Blizzard Fab5's to light up the band members, depending on the size of the room.
Members StratGuy22
To kick it up a notch we add 4 Martin Minimac Profiles. They can be found on eBay for $450 each + shippng. I think they were around $1200 new. $450 each isn't bad. Get a bit of movement going on...
Members StratGuy22
Then for some icing on the cake we add 4 Chauvet Intimidator Spot Duos to the top of the truss. Yeah baby, yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!! Oh behave.
Members BillESC
Do you want just light or a light show? The answer will determine the amount spent.

Yeah baby, yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!! Oh behave. I've been looking at the Spot Duo's and Spot Duo 150's. They look great in your vid. I'm staying away from a dmx controller at this time, so how do they do on Sound Active mode? Do they run a little slower and look good with rock music, or is it a blinky flashy disco show? Members StratGuy22
I've never tried them without DMX control. DMXIS is a pretty handy program. Not being a light guy, I've done some pretty decent scenes on them.
Members sventvkg
Looks like we are about to spend 7-10k for a ligh show and 10k for our video...but we're a high end Corporate/private events band.

Members cappttenron
I think this is a good place to start if you have nothing and you can build on it. Blizzard is also very nice.http://www.amazon.com/ADJ-Products-MEGA-FLAT-PLUS/dp/B00URN57ZI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1456499294&sr=8-2&keywords=american+dj+tri+par+plus
