Members Tomm Williams
Could some of you kind folks please tell me what your favorite hi-hat mic is. I'm currently using an sm81 but that's just because I have extra to use. I like the sound but was wondering if anybody has other input. Thanks TW
Members Coaster
it would cost a lot more to get better real world sound than an 81 on a HH.
Members oldschooler
+1 on the SM 81.
Members NUSound
You can use almost anything in a pinch, but the '81 is my standard.
Members agedhorse
SM-81 is fine with me.
Members W. M. Hellinger
If an SM-81 isn't returning the results you're looking for, then the mic isn't the issue.
Members Special J
I use an AKG 451 on my own kit, but almost always use an 81 otherwise.
Members TimmyP
If you need additional mics, try an AT Pro37.
Members trevcda
The Oktava MK012 with the cardoid cap is my favorite. It also works well for a two or three point drum mic configuration. But like everyone else I keep a pair of SM81s in the locker.
Members Axisplayer
I use 81s also.
Members The Real MC
Sennheiser 441 sounds terrific but I highpass it at 2K to get rid of everything except cymbals. And it's centered over the drum kit which picks up cymbals (even the HH) beautifully. The dynamics sound a lot more natural than a condenser. Members Unalaska
Samson C02Marshall MXL992CAD GXL1200Behringer C5(?, 2 for $69) They all work just fine. Maybe not as road worthy as the SM81 but I've had most longer than 4 yrs now and all have done well. HPF around 400 if possible.
Members Mogwix
i use an audio-technica AE5100. SM-81's are fine.
Members 6Imzadi
I use Mark's (Audiopile) drum mic kits so the little condenser is used on the HH. That said, I find that I sometimes get too much sizzle from it. Beside turning down the input gain, what are some methods to tame the beast? Eq? Dynamics? Sorry to derail the thread. Members Phil Clark
I usually use an SM-57 on the High Hat, and we use the 81 as an overhead.

Members Unalaska
I find the gain pretty hot on all the mics I use as well. Start there, 2nd mic placement, then eq to taste.
Members Dogoth
The Oktava MK012 with the cardoid cap is my favorite. It also works well for a two or three point drum mic configuration. But like everyone else I keep a pair of SM81s in the locker. +1 for the Octava 012 (I think they sound a little better than the 81 and are a lot cheaper) but....... 20 years from now the SM 81 is still going to work perfectly. I'll bet the same can't be said for the Octava (not that they're bad but Shure is legendary in their reliability). As stated there are better mics (AKG C451E, AKG Blueline, Neumann KM84, just to name a few) but they all cost much more and except for extremly critical use IMO aren't worth the extra bucks. Best Bang for Buck = SM
