Members Paolo Di Nicolantonio
Friend - if you don't "play stuff on the keys at the same time", the vocoder doesn't work. It needs carrier and modulator...

Members Boxed
Can you use the vocoder and play stuff on the keys at the same time? You have to play the notes that you are vocoding.
Members FLNagle
Yeah... T-Pain is uses autotune, not a vocoder. Don't be misled by silly jokes. With a vocoder, you hold down a chord and your voice (the modulator) makes an almost "talking synthesizer" based on what the synth is set up to play (the carrier). Members The Severalist
It doesn't work though if you don't talk about computers and the future.
Members Gangsta Geek
Nawh, dawg. T-Pain be using dat Vocoder. C dat vid? Da Vocoder talks to T-Pain. The Vocoder has 'is name on top. T-Pain not be lyin'.:poke:Uh, I know that was a joke, which is why I posted it. The ability to use the synth section separately from the vocoder depends on the structure of the synth, not how vocoders work in general. The MicroKorg has only one timbre in vocoder mode, which is sent as the carrier to the vocoder synthesis filter. The MicroKorg XL has two timbres which are both sent as the carrier. The R3, however, outputs Timbre 2 independently of the vocoder, and the vocoder can run from formant motion memory, so it's quite normal on the R3 to be able to use the vocoder and the synth simultaneously. Radias can also output 3 timbres/drumkit independently of the timbre used for the vocoder carrier. The R3/Radias can also patch the mic audio through a timbre to be sent to the modulator, while using a different timbre for the carrier, which allows an interesting option because you can blend the modulator source with the vocoder output using the direct/HPF level parameters. So the answer is the MicroKorg vocoder structure has only one timbre that is dedicated for use as the carrier, and can't be used independently when the vocoder has been enabled. It also loses one timbre in vocoder mode. How many timbre does the alesis micron have? Can you use the vocoder and the synth simultaneously on the alesis micron? Gus Lozada
If what you need is to do a robotic voice AND play a synth patch, independently with the same keyboard, the answer is NO. In case you have not got the concept yet, a vocoder effect -a properly done one- is an input -MODULATION- signal (the microphone) and a synth sound -the CARRIER- which will be blended with the microphone to give the robotic personality to a human voice. So, you need to use the keyboard to play the synth tones you want the voice to "sing", and this means that you can not play a different sound with the keys, other than the one affecting the voice in the microphone.
