WAY OT: The Matrix

Oh, I thought this was going to be about the new SSL controller/router (and maybe that M-Audio is coming out with a $1000 version).
;)

Had to LOL at the M-Audio portion of your comment!

Anyway, I just read the review of the SSL Matrix in PAR, and it became immediately clear to me I don't need one. From what I can tell, having one would be cool, but would also be a tremendous sink-hole of time. It's designed to do lots of stuff for you, but I think the real usage of such a device would be full of many wasted hours.

Isn't that how you make money in this business? That is if your studio is for hire. ;)

I think I could like one, but I'd need some more stuff first (like more outboard preamps and signal processors) and I'd need to get really comfortable working with a DAW. And I'd like to have 24 channels on the control surface rather than 16.

I'm rather liking the Allen & Heath ZED-R16 that I've been playing with for a while now. It gives you almost as much flexibility as the Matrix as far as outboards if you don't go overboard, it can be an analog unity gain summing bus with MIDI DAW controls, or it can be an analog mixer with 16 returns from the DAW. Preamps and EQ sound good, makes really good sense for tracking (works just like using an in-line console). It can be do 16 channel capture and a PA mixer for live work.

Quite flexible. But you have to accept conservative when it comes to sample rates. Above 48 kHz, you start losing pieces - no ADAT I/O, and no stereo mix. Still, at standard sample rate, it sounds just fine. With a Matrix, you'd probably want nothing lower grade than Apogee A*-16x, or better. A much heavier investment all around.

So what's this other Matrix thing?
