Members devinw
OK, so for some reason I found that I can't seem to play as well when I have shoes on. I fell MUCH more comfortable and connected to the drumset when I just play with socks on. It seems like I also can't articulate the kick drum as well with shoes on. Anyone else feel this way, or am I crazy? :poke:
Members BroadST
Same here. When I play at home, its always with shoes off and most of the time without socks. It just feels more comfortable. Every time I go to my lesson though, I have my shoes on and I never play the kick as well.

Members theFoot
I think there is another thread with this in it somewhere. I play mostly barefoot these days, but really because I wear flip-flops 80% of the time. I used to play in Doc 8 holes, now I play barefoot. I'm pretty comfy with sox, flip-flops, shoes boots, whatever. Although, some things may be awkward, it all settles in after a while. My teacher kicked my ass one day when I mentioned I couldn't get something right due to the boots I was wearing. He didn't mince words telling me how lame of an excuse that was. I made it a point to not let my footwear get in the way after that. just watch out for the nasty teeth on that chain-drive pedal!

Members 1001gear
Still barefoot. Try boxing gloves for snare drum if you need clarification.

Members gcdrummer
I prefer flat soled shoes like Vans. But in reality, if you can't adjust your playing to your environment you are very much limiting yourself.
Members devinw
Well that's nice to know that I'm not the only one . Just to clarify, I wasn't actually saying I can't play well with shoes on (definitely have done it), but I find it much harder to "finesse" the kick pedel with socks on. Jeff Graw, that's an interesting link. I wonder if driving shoes (or wrestling shoes) would work similarly.

I prefer just socks, although it seems my shoes give an extra punch sometimes.
Members JakeBurton
I prefer socks. Just the right amount of cushion for the pushin'.

They might, I've never used them so I wouldn't know. In my experience martial arts shoes give pretty much all of the advantages of playing barefoot and with shoes with very few, if any, disadvantages. Members Zeromus-X
I don't have nearly as much power without shoes, but if I'm playing fast stuff I tend to play barefoot. We only play one song that I play heel-toe and I pop my shoes off before that one, and then again at the end of the show when I'm just going nuts on stuff. Members soundcreation
Chalk me up in the sock catagory. I can play fine with shoes but my drums were always in the house in the den. Obviously don't wear shoes around the house so whenever I played it was in my socks. Don't really like barefoot though. Anyone seen the modern drummer festival 2005? I think it was the guy who won the best new or up and coming drummer, whatever, came out and played in brand new socks.....I was laughing when I saw that. Members genghiskog
I don't really like playing in socks very well. My feet slide on the pedals too much. Maby I should do it for a while and see if I can put a little more feeling into my bass work.
Members coyote-1
I practice barefoot or with socks, but when I play I wear running shoes (used to be called 'sneakers' ). I just find I have better control that way.

Members jenksdrummer
Try playing with steel toe work boots on I've found that depending on what I have on my feet, determines how authorative I am with the bass drum. Please reference the following chart: Most Authority, slower Steel Toes Non-steel toe work boots Hikers Hi-tops Mid-tops low top running shoes low top "skater" shoes (airwalk, converse, etc) socks bare WEAK, faster I've also found that jeans vs shorts makes a huge difference... Members John Busbee
wrestling shoes and the new style pumas are great for me...plyaing barefoot in clubs is really too nasty and dangerous.
Members danrothmusic
I really can't tell a difference. OK, yes I can, but after about a minute, it doesn't affect my playing
Members crocophile
i found one time when i wore shoes i could double pedal a bit faster, but usually im barefoot.. or in my mocasins, which come off when the feet get too sweaty hah

I tried to tell that to my teacher as well and he said about the same thing. I found the best shoe for me when I have to wear them are vans. Nice and flat and comfortable. Like I said before, most of the time at home, its barefoot. I hate socks with a passion. I wear them for work for obvious reasons and when its cold aroung the house but I much prefer bere feet. Members marko46
Socks. But I've always thought that those slip on water shoes that are very light and thin may work well.
Members Merlin Coryell
Jenks, whats the difference you feel with jeans? I only play with shorts, sometimes loose housepants/underpants if its cold. Sometimes nude when were having a particularly good practice...
