  1. may i ask what experience you have micing gongs? not trying to be argumentative, but your first two sentences tell me you are just guessing... i appreciate your wanting to help, but id rather not guess if im going to invest in decent gear... thank you.
  2. upon occasion, the need for being mic'd is becoming an unfortunate necessity. rather than be at the mercy of a production crew that may or may not fully grasp the nature of the beast, what are my options in mics that are capable of capturing the nuance and air of these instruments in a live setting? one challenge is that recently ive been in improv situations with numerous musicians on everything from harmonica, didgeridoos, guitar, djembes and various percussionists... completely outside my comfort zone, yet proving to be insanely provocative and productive in breaking imaginary boundaries. i stumbled upon a recording mic that works wonderfully well, in solo situations... a zoom q8 with a stereo shotgun mic, it captures the highs of the surface work, timbre etc, and the stereo mic seems to pic up the resonance and surrounding air... im happy with what that system captures ( to my tired ears ) so i know its possible... so, akg c214's? ribbon mics? kinda sorta looking at this thing like mic'ing up the air around a string quartet. much appreciated...
  3. most awesome! I sit for hours playing gongs and singing bowls. ive found a good base is key... I use a moon meditation seat system that's pretty comfortable sitting lotus even for extended sessions. but not supporting an instrument either. definitely considering a single tumba. #s 2 & 3 I'm figuring goes with the territory as well but then I'm not known for staying anywhere near inside the box for long. now, #4... everything is relative... ive been looking at one piece, no neck joint and they seem to run around 1800 to 2200 u.s.d. for what I'm assuming to be decent mid level instrument?
  4. cool, so you know the basics... playing a kit takes some limb separation/ independence... kinda like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time... no real biggie, just takes some longer than others like anything else in life... a factor to consider is which joints are affected... getting behind a kit for a few days or even better, a few weeks is going to tell you a lot more than any of us... and keep playing that guitar ( as well as adding slide) too! just more tools in your workshop...
  5. no... but im up to three gongs and looking... lusting after a 52" chau, currently... if so, i am seriosly going to go to a two person load and set up... in truth, my new obsession with bronze resonant instruments has had me pretty well entranced for the past year... i think the only new instrument since has been a bali hand pan
  6. i turned every one of them down except for one... and we are still together...
  7. You have the right attitude... Or so I'm told.. Im holding off on the sitar for a bit... Another gong is already in transit... Yay! Yes, I'm a gong addict.
  8. I'd bet you could get a gourd replaced... I've seen them offered on evil bay and the like...
  9. I looked at Teh ouds... Didn't ring true on that... There are several variations of sitar like instruments aren't there? Like a bass sitar and isn't there one with less drones and primaries?
  10. I assure you my approach will be anything but strictly traditional but I make no apologies. I do hold to the concept of trying to understand the correct workings of a thing before one starts taking liberties with the alternative routes to be explored... Sometimes...
  11. I've wanted to learn to play sitar for too long, it's time to stop wanting and start doing. There seems to be a push in my (musical) life that's in a different direction than planned,( yes, I know,). Of all the instruments around here, I'm gravitating to the gongs, singing bowls, and such. Two types of instruments I've wanted to learn are hand pans and sitar. I've played a couple hand pans, some are magical instruments. Sitar? I'm pretty much in The dark. I figured pretty much like checking fit and finish on any other instrument . My luthier has experience working with them so thats a leg up, thank you Gary Hudson! I saw some modern looking things with all machine tuners and while that appeals to the practical it left me totally cold... Some of the double toomba swan heads I've seen were exquisite workmanship and looked sturdy yet graceful? Ganesh?
  12. Anyone here have a sitar? I've been looking but having no experience with them, what do I need to look for? Even the cheesy looking instruments are touted as " professional quality". How's to tell?
  13. Oh... No rools? This could be a lot of fun... I'm definitely in...
  14. it's a thought... but so is relative anonymity... if we did start another one, realistically what kind of shipping/mailing charges are we looking at? and what, if any, were the rools of engagement?
  15. i remember that... i never participated but it was a very cool concept...

  17. we made up a song "menu"... a laminated song list of about 200 of our tunes that folks can just write the numbers down for requests... it helps figure out which way the current crowd is leaning for musical tastes... sometimes...
