  1. Btw I am using an "old" Mackie ProDX4 mixer (also have a DX8) because many of the places I encounter have a house system, so having my mixer gives me a level of consistency. I guess if one always used personal gear, then perhaps an all in one PA could be handy. Never been a big fan of all my eggs in one basket - except for the little Bose Si Pro, which is great for small to medium quiet gigs.
  2. I normally stand, but the lounge pictured now has a plexi-screen that works better if one sits. I was partially torn down, but it still shows my tablet holder, the Bose L1 (which I recommend) seat, pedals and guitar behind the chair. I use large enough fonts to read my tablet at a distance. This is the airport gig I've been doing for some time. The L1 works as mains and monitor. There is a second L1 about fifty feet away {it's a huge room} but I don't often use it, because I want to create a quiet zone for those eating or talking.
  3. Indeed. I prefer the Sennheiser e835 over the SM58 and the Beta 58. I have a half dozen e835s and the same for the 58s, but when I'm doing live sound, I try to steer the performer towards the e835. The e835s don't have that mid bump that can sometimes get ugly. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with the SM58 if that's what you've got, or that's what suits you best.
  4. Understand your position regarding your gig Notes. I did a backyard BBQ that I was going to decline. The host mentioned all the safety protocols, and that he wasn't inviting anyone that wasn't double vaccinated and generally cautious. Then he basically said that for some people, this might be the last year they could attend, either due to death or becoming infirm. He was joking, but only sort of. I've been gigging back at my airport venue, and I've been wearing my mask - so far so good. I also have a Jazz festival gig (45 minutes) indoors, that was supposed to be outside, so that will be a masked gig as well. Got a boat cruise coming up, where everyone has to be vaccinated but as we know, one can still spread Covid even if vaccinated. Yep, the saga continues. Stay safe.
  5. I did my first indoor live gig since 2020 on June 13th. It felt pretty strange, and the band sat outside on the patio during the breaks. Except for the singer, we all wore masks. It was a small band doing a tribute to Dinah Washington - vocalist, acoustic piano, string bass and guitar, although the bass player and I had amps and the piano was mic'ed. I wrote all the charts for the gig, so all we needed was a forty minute Zoom rehearsal - yay! A couple of days later, I got a last minute call to play a downtown "exclusive" club. It was a patio gig, so I said sure. PA was provided. It was the usual, play background music, but don't fade into the background! Even though I used to play that venue every month or so, I could take it or leave it now. I think I've developed a bit of an attitude during the Big Break. Still and all, that's two gigs in one month. That ties my pandemic record, and that brings me to three gigs this year. Got one scheduled for July and one for September. I'm tired just thinking about it...
  6. I see they even managed to squeeze a kitchen sink into that Line 6 amp. Doesn't look like it will fetch my slippers and light my pipe, but I'll keep reading, maybe it will!
  7. If you're the kind of player that frets over NOS tubes versus a matched set of "empty your wallet" tubes, and/or you've replaced your PUPs a million times, then I don't think you'll find an amp that does both. If you aren't all that fussy then maybe you can find something that is passable for electric and acoustic. Why not go direct with your acoustic and use your monitor? If you don't have separate mixes and monitors, then I would be tempted to go with two smaller dedicated amps. For guitars, are we talking a pre CBS Fender and an older Martin, or a couple of cheapos?
  8. I hear tempo/beat oddities as well, not that your average civilian could. I personally wouldn't want to adapt my playing to fit a machine. Especially considering the problem of changing back when you play with a band. I guess my thing is, I consider myself a guitar player that does solo stuff - not a solo artist. Last night, I was fortunate enough to gig with some of the best jazz/soul players in the city. My solo work to tracks helped me, in that I was in shape, and very aware of tempo. Again, I can't imagine if I had learned to push each chord a little, and then tried to make music with others. But to each his/her own. The Korg looks interesting and I hope it works out well, but it's not my cup of tea.
  9. Chasing down an errant soloed aux is a good step, but the fact that he is getting no level when he solos a channel suggests there is more to it. The ribbon connectors on Mackie boards, especially of a certain era, were prone to problems. If the OP is certain there are no solo lights on, and he can't get signal from anything soloed, I would suggest he follow Craig's advice. I'm pretty much all thumbs, and even I can reseat a connector - however YMMV, so see a technician if this is above your pay grade. Just be prepared to pay...
  10. I've been at this for several decades now, mostly club gigs, and mostly as the guitar player with the PA. I have done and still do, a few sound only gigs, but if I'm running my PA it's usually from stage. Although many of the places I play have in house systems and techs (Casinos, some clubs...)
