1. It's more important than lead guitar in a lot of instances. It's more important than lead in ALL instances...
2. Haha....good thing you said something before I did I don't understand Radiohead Oh I understand them...I just don't like them. I'm more of a verve guy myself. But I will give them credit they deserve...they've had a huge impact on music.
3. How bout "none of the above"? Sorry...couldn't resist.
4. Yeah I don't know. A lot of you guys are pretty high and mighty over this subject. I don't steal. But honestly there are SO MANY things on my list higher than stealing in terms of being offensive. It's just stuff. My bike was stolen from me when I was kid. Yeah it sucks, but I got over it. My own {censored}in fault for not locking it anyway. In my neighborhood it was just part of the game growing up. Just found out my mothers house got B&E'd the other day (my drums and valuable cymbals are still there) and thankfully only a few things were taken, and none of my drum stuff. But honestly...whatever....i'd get over it. My mom thinks the thief's probably walked out thinking what a waste of time it was hitting that house...LOL. And I especially don't have a problem with stealing from corporations and their government whores who are the biggest {censored}in criminals this planet has ever seen. Those mother {censored}ers don't ever give anything back and have been stealing from all of us, through corporate welfare government subsidies. But because they write the laws too...it's not called stealing. Nice racket they got going. I ain't got no problem with Robin Hood type {censored}.
5. Wow...what a bunch of good people here. I tried when I was a kid. 7th grade my elementary school had a peavey strat that never got played. I "borrowed" it from the music teacher with the hopes he wouldn't remember. Had that thing for nearly a month before some cocky little {censored} 6th grader asked the music teacher for it and I had to give it back. That was it...I took up drums. Then later in high school that 6th grader became my guitarist, and we had a good laugh about it. Took me another 20 something years to get back to guitar!
6. When I mean that the budget is irrelevant, I mean that I know I can afford a 2nd hand fender strat MIA deluxe, but will not push into the custom build territory!!!!!! I have a MIJ guitar that's excellent, a 1983 Aria Pro 2, but I do specifically want a fender strat. Could sound narrow minded, but I've been a humbucker player all my life, and whilst I'm gassing for a strat, I will buy it 2nd hand, and I'm keeping in mind that I want it to be able to resell for the same price should I fail to bond with it. So whilst Van Zandts guitars might be simliar to a strat, or even 2% better, I know that reselling more obsucr brands, even though possibly better, is more touch and go. That's funny cause I have a 79 aria pro II strat I payed two hundred bucks for and have yet to find a mexican or factory USA strat that has a neck as nice.
7. Budget is irrelevant, I want the best!!!!! (2nd hand that is, and not one of those signature/reissue rip off!!!) If you're willing to buy online...then... go here http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box/e/ Type in "Van Zandt" and check out the three strats they have for sale. Then go here to see the specs http://www.taurus-jp.com/vanzandt/guitar.html You want the best...well there they are. With all do respect to fender, the 1600 bucks you'd spend on one of those van zandts will get you a masterbuilt quality guitar. Ultra thin nitro finished guitars of the highest quality. You won't find a fender any better than these.
8. I dig 80s and early 90s Japanese and the prices are getting pretty silly on those kinds of items. In the last two weeks, I bought a Japanese Squier, a Japanese Fender and a Japanese Aria Pro II for less most of the Japanese Fenders are listed BIY on eBay. I still look there, but rarely find guitars I'd buy for the asking prices. Some of them are getting silly. But really man don't waste your time with ebay for Japanese guitars. Sign up with rinkya and bid on them straight out of yahoo auctions japan yourself. You have to make sure to do the math because rinkya fees will add about 10+% and shipping...but when you win a good auction it usually still works out cheaper than the guys who sell on ebay from japan. With some exceptions of course. Also the web shops like Ishibashi are good. Their prices are usually fair..usually a bit cheaper than ebay and the service is fantastic. Selection is a little more limited though.
9. There is a happy medium between a "Disney" movie and a forced interaction that did not really reveal all that much. It felt like they were uncomfortable being there. I think Jack White was ultimately a bad choice for the film. If you replaced him with a Springsteen I think it would have lightened things up and you would have had a more open and fun exchange. yeah...{censored}in springsteen would have been a better choice.... maybe page was the bad choice and it should have been someone like...oh I don't know....David Gilmour? LOL.. Really what I think is going on here with you and a couple other posters is just more Jack White bashing. Of course you guys dress it up a little nicer so you can appear to be unbiased but really you just don't like him. He is absolutely the perfect choice for this movie as he is about the only superstar guitarist around these days who is doing anything interesting with the instrument.
10. Just saw it too. Good movie. Big fan of all three so it was interesting to hear their stories. And that old footage of U2 as teens was amazing. I for one am so thankful that someone like JW has been able to reach an audience outside of the guitar world with this type of music. He really is the one guy keeping true blues alive and in the consciousness of more than just the guitar crowd.
11. Yep....drums, and guitar. Surfing as well but I've been a bit land locked for a couple years so I've lost what little ability I had. Still though...nothing quite like dropping down the face of a wave...Nothing clears your mind quite like it.
12. I think them being poly you won't have to worry about any finish issues. If you know for sure there won't be any moisture then I suppose you don't need to worry too much about strings...I personally am a bit paranoid cause I live in such a humid place...regular strings rust without touching in 2 or 3 weeks..and rust is like cancer...it will spread to frets etc. I would use coated just as a precaution. Can't hurt right?
13. Are your guitars Nitro? I would definitely go with the coated string idea.
14. Some one posted a video of Paul Gilbert doing the most amazing pick slide....I would love to see that video again..but haven't been able to track it down. Sounded like a bolt of lightning was shooting out of his guitar.
15. And someone mentioned Yngwie shredding on a strat. True, but he scalloped his fretboard, which is essentially like putting MASSIVE frets on it. I love Strats and Teles. Love them! But I can play much faster much longer when I play one of my Jackson/Charvels. Yngwie scalloped his board because he didn't like the feel of fret board under his fingers. It had nothing to do with speed. He even says on an interview clip that it makes playing fast MORE difficult. Check out speed kills by Michael angelo batio and he shreds the same on every guitar he plays. And he plays a vintage strat in one of the clips. Personally I don't believe the hype about this guitar plays faster than that. It's all what you practice on.
16. Maybe guitarists of that era wanted their own style? Didn't feel like being locked in by tradition? Wanted their own sound? Obviously there were physical things about the guitars that made playing more comfortable. I prefer strats teles les pauls and SG's but one need only pick up a jackson soloist once to know the ergonomics of it are way better than all of those aside from maybe the SG. And lets face it...80's guitarists beat the shit out of there guitars more than anyone before while still expecting it to finish the gig..so floyds were a necessary invention. It's not like you can't shred on the others. Malmsteen plays just as fast as anyone on a strat and I've seen Batio play a Les Paul as fast as he plays anything else.
17. Sorry, I "bothered" to read as far as that post and then responded. Did I do something wrong, Dad? Well then you might have realize I and others addressed why the necks might be different regardless of where they were CNC'd. But since you didn't read it now you look foolish.
18. It's interesting that you say this because I believe, per a recent article done by a guy who'd just toured the Mexican plants, the necks for the MIMs are, in fact, made in the states and sent down. Hmmm..... Did you bother to read the rest of the discussion we had on why those necks might be different?
19. Ahhh... so there are actual technical differences then. See I just kind of figured it was all QC. Oh totally, I would imagine the MIA Fenders get more time in the hands of a tech before getting thrown in the box. I've never played a MIJ Fender but everyone says they're some of the best out there, which is interesting as they supposedly use lesser quality woods and electronics than the MIA ones? LOL...well I didn't say they were fender! They're seymour duncans made by esp. My strat This would be equivalent to high end custom shop or master built level from fender. Fender Japan also has a custom shop from what I understand and they make some crazy nice guitars too. There are so many models from Fender Japan that it's hard to make generalizations about wood etc. Funny, I just remembered a mexican tele my friend and I played. It had a "custom shop" neck plate on it (mexican custom shop??) and it was pricey. Around 800 bucks. But the neck on that thing was basically as nice as the neck on my SD tele. Felt amazing. So it just goes to show that there are exceptions if you look hard. But generally they do tend to fall in line with price.
20. Probably a good rule of thumb. See, thats the only difference I can even corner down on a regular basis, yet I'm terribly confused by the fact that the MIM factory doesn't even make necks. In fact, all MIM Fenders have MIA necks on them. But there is certainly a difference, my guess is they use lower quality woods for the ones to be exported? My guess would be finishing. I'd assume that all of them are CNC'd and then given to someone for some final sanding, coating etc. I'm guessing that the USA's spend more time in someone's hand getting a more personal touch. Probably a matter of orders to fill and deadlines to meet. To me it's what sets the really great guitars apart. I have two fender high end japanese copies. Hand made. And that's where they just slay everything I've ever layed hands on. The feel of the necks seem like it was gone over and over and over till everything felt perfect. Just not enough time to do that in a mass production environment.
21. Don't own either but played a bunch helping a friend look. The obvious difference to me was the necks. The MIA nearly always felt much nicer. There was the odd mexican that felt better than the odd USA but that was rare. And to me there is nothing trivial about the feel of a neck. In my opinion it's probably one of the most important things along with resonance.
22. I don't know. A lot of the rock/rap bands seem to rip off rage quite a bit. I'd say Morello has had some impact. Personally I think morello's greatest strength is that of riff master. I'd put him right up there with pete townsend, angus young and jimmy page as one of the best writers of fist pumping riffs.
23. It's time.... EVH just doesn't seem as impressive anymore because guitarists are so use to hearing the things he helped to create as standard fare nowadays. Basically short term memory. I'll forgive EVH for not being interesting anymore...because when he first came out..he {censored}in broke the mold and he was pure lightning. If people can't put themselves in that perspective then that is their problem. Doesn't change the fact he is one of the most important guitarists in the history of the instrument.
24. All true, but- Saxon:facepalm: I'm fully metal believe me- but no-one wants to be a laughing stock! I saw Death Angel in London (for the 5th time) recently and they were cool as you like with pointy ESPs etc. I also saw Sacred Reich and Phil Rind told everyone to take it easy in the mosh pit cos "20 years ago if we went down we got back up, now you'll need an ambulance!" Holy {censored} death angel...haven't heard that name in a while....I loved Bored. I did laugh a bit when I saw testament about a year ago. Fat {censored}ers...but they really put on a pro show.
25. Dude have you seen some of the old 80's bands recently? Testament? Slayer? Maiden? They look like old {censored}in dudes playing metal. And they are still rockin. Yeah a part of me kind of chuckles when I see them but at the same time watch Flight 666 from maiden. Man those dudes are still tight as ever and full of energy. There are no rules for this {censored}. Just have fun. And besides...since when did any proper metal head give a {censored} what anyone else thought of them?
