Members Hard Truth
Their coolest feature was easilly swappable pickups. Univox, among others, made knockoffs in the seventies. The Dan Armstrongs are available again but with a conventional, not clear, body.
Members Hard Truth
Dillon's clear guitars Dillion crystal guitars are made once or twice a year in very limited quantities, usually 4 to 8 of a model. Each guitar is numbered and dated and comes with a signed corresponding certificate of authenticity. They all have solid acrylic bodies with matching acrylic headstocks. They also have maple necks with rosewood fingerboards and hand polished and crowned frets. They also feature professional diecast gears and Dillion custom wound pickups. The suggested list price on all models are $999.00 with the exception of models DFV-58CA and DRR-CA which lists for $1099.00 Model DRR-CA-FR with Floyd Rose tremolo has a suggested list price of $1199.
Members yzfou
You can't link it that way.. You have to right click on the actual photo, then click poperties to get the actual url of the photo itself. Your link goes to the page displaying the photo, not the actual photo. OMG I didn't know you could do that:eek: Everytime I wanted to post a pic I saved it to my photobucket account, then I copied the link. RaVenCad, you made me buy a X3 and now that! I'm forever in your debt my brotha.
Members RaVenCAD
Happy to help =) be aware though, your method prevents someone from changing the picture in the future. I've seen more than one person on more than one forum get banned because someone got annoyed at the bandwidth usage and changed the pic to porn.. The linked pic becomes porn, the person that posted it gets the blame and goes byebye..

Members Mr.Mow
I've got a Fernandes 'crystal' Jaguar copy, yes its heavy.. about 12kgs, but it sustains amazingly and most surprisingly sounds really warm and full..
Members HeatherAnnePeel
I have both a '70 original (left) and an '06 RI (right): There were copies by Univox, Ibanez and others in the '70s, but I'm not aware of any now. Both the original and the RI sound great, with a biting midrange tone. By the way Plexiglas and Lucite are the same thing, the material is actually called: PMMA (polymethyl 2-methylpropenoate) is a thermoplastic and transparent plastic. Chemically, it is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. It is sold by the trade names Plexiglas, Vitroflex, Limacryl, R-Cast, Per-Clax, Perspex, Plazcryl, Acrylex, Acrylite, Acrylplast, Altuglas, Polycast, Oroglass, Optix and Lucite and is commonly called acrylic glass, simply acrylic, perspex or plexiglas. Acrylic, or acrylic fiber, can also refer to polymers or copolymers containing polyacrylonitrile. The material was developed in 1928 in various laboratories and was brought to market in 1933 by Rohm and Haas Company.
Members tlbonehead
Acrylic most likely. He only played them in his younger days & only for a live 'visual' aspect, most likely never touching them in the studio.Actually the old Dan A's sounded pretty mean. A number of companies made/make different shaped lucite acrylic body guitars. Heavy as heck. I have a cheapo Galveston. I put HB-Sized P90s in it and it just kills. (pic before pickup swap) Our own Heather has a Dan Armstrong, I believe.
Members RifRandall
I have one of the Dillion PRS clear guitars. I bought a padded 3" wide base strap so I'd be able to play it for more than one song. It it way too heavy for normal use. The guy I bought it off put Bill Laurence XL 500's in it. I ended up taking of the {censored}ty rotary pickup switch and replacing it with a proper toggle and put in a coil split switch tone pot. It sounds good for playing heavier stuff and sustains forever. It certainly doesn't sound warm tho.
Members HeatherAnnePeel
The Dan Armstrongs weigh about as much as a Les Paul, they aren't too heavy.
Members tlbonehead
The Dan Armstrongs weigh about as much as a Les Paul, they aren't too heavy. As does my Galveston. However the body is noticeably smaller than a LP and quite a bit thinner. If it were standard LP size/thickness it would be HEAVY.
Members jerry_picker
The originals were made of Lucite.. I believe the reissues are made of plexiglass. Lucite and Plexiglas are both PMMA.
Members jmannatl
Well, this guy has been playing one for years: Rick Richards of the Georgia Satellites, uses it for slide. It is a heavy beast however..
Members dogtemple
just thought id add to this - the Dan Armstrong perspex guitars were never made for tone or anything. they were made to show the internals of a guitar for demonstration purposes of the pickups. Dan Armstrong is Kent Armstrong's Dad (the pickup guy), he told me when i was at his workshop the whole deal with them, as there was a perspex guitar sitting in the corner, the clear body was to show the insides to non-guitar people and investors etc to help them understand what it was all about. They had a certain novelty value hence they made a few to sell commercially. thats from what i remember. it was quite a few years back when i was about 16 i was told the story, so there maybe some other bits to go with that that i forgot

Members golias
A company called "Galviston" makes super-cheap Lucite guitars in some random Chinese factory and puts them up on eBay once in a while. The neck is... not good, and they DESPERATELY need the pickups swapped for something better... but you can usually snag them for $125 (or less), so even after a set of Duncans it's pretty cheap. Just have your fret file ready.
