Members Loxley
Is it safe to use on poly? Using a paint thinner/stripper is scary, so I'm just making sure that it's safe on all guitar finishes. Thanks!
Members Metalrulez
Yep you can use it on poly. Just about the only things that will hurt poly are a hammer, fire or a atomic bomb.

I don't know...is the heat flash from an atomic explosion enough?
Members Eugayle
What are you trying to do?If you are cleaning you can use naptha on rosewood fret boards.Unfinished maple you use 0000 steel wool.Ebony you use a good silicone free polish.Beeswax is the best.Naptha will dull finishes such as poly or any clearcoat. So, only use naptha on unfinished rosewood necks.Hope this helps.BTW there are many better options than lighter fliud. You can use it on poly(I have) but it will dull the finish then you may have to buff it.
Members Loxley
So don't use it on poly (I'd prefer not to dull any finish!).. got it. I've heard it's completely safe to use on nitro though, is this correct?

Members Metalrulez
Oh boy....I have used naphtha, lighter fluid on poly and nitro with no ill effects. Maybe you were just smearing some form of {censored} around that the solvent would not cut. Remember kiddies if all else fails do the research. Members ArKay
Just removed a thick layer of nicotine from a guitar with lighter fluid... Worked great, no ill effects either.

Members DaleH
Damp cloth with warm soapy water. Dry and use some guiter polish after.
Members Phillbis
Gibson told me it was okay to use Naptha (lighter fluid) to clean my Les Paul. I've had no problems yet. It also works great to get the gunk off of a fretboard as long as you condition it after cleaning.

Well I've never noticed any dulling. By any chance are you using lighter fluid? I've used some that seem to have additives or something that leaves a residue. The naptha you get in the painting section of the hardware store doesn't have that problem.
Members atrox
I use Naphtha on poly guitars all the time. It's great for getting rid of gunk. I personally have never experienced it dulling any finish.. and we are talking a lot of guitars I get in.

Members headless
Well, I have used a Strategic Nuclear fusion device on my Fender poly finish, and it left crazing (kinda cool!). But a Tactical fission device might be okay on poly.
