I was offered to trade my Hamer Studio '95 (see img http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/3127/hamerfull2.jpg) for $400 and this Moon Telecaster (pictures below) I wonder wether it a bargian since I don't like my Studio Sound very much.

I've recently gotten a similar Moon (only stratocaster) for $500 and I like it more than my Hamer.

So again, what do you think if it's a good trade (my Hamer for $400 and the Moon Tele)

Well, I wouldn't do it. But if you don't like your Hamer, and you would play the Moon more, maybe it's worth it? You are getting some money in the deal, too, which helps I guess. Are you able to try the guitar out before trading?

RADICAL.RU - is free image files hosting.

I do have an opportunity to check out the guitar. Actually, it is my friend, he sold me the Hamer first; now he regretts and wants it back or (Gibson Studio) and he doesn't like single-coil pups (even active ones like in that Moon)

The Hamer is not that bad, but I have a Gibson SG Supreme which for me is all way better than the Hamer.

Hamers are rare in my disctrict so the prices for Hamer are abit high, while Moons are not that famous and that's why Moon prices are the same as abroad.

The owner says it's mahagony body.

Maybe.....I think he might be mistaken though. I'm thinking it's walnut. Quite a bit of figuring on the close up shot of the back. I haven't seen mahogany like that before.

But then I'm no wood expert. It's just walnut is consistent with the oil finished moon "woody" series.

Again, it could be. In the fourth picture in you're original post the neck wood seems to me to have fairly open grain which suggested to me that it's a very nice dark rose wood. But some of the other pics do look very ebony like.

Here's an older one for sale in Japan...(think they're dreaming on getting that price though...)

That one looks a lot like the one you're looking at. The wood is walnut and the board is ebony. just bound and gold hardware.

I think many of the older moon guitars could be spec'd out by the buyer in many different configurations. I personally wouldn't worry about what type of wood it is. If it plays and sounds better than your hamer then isn't that really enough? I mean value wise those things sell new for 2K + so it's not like it isn't "worth" what the hamer is. Just comparing 'new' value it would be worth more.

Moon isn't a terribly common brand even in Japan and I seem to be seeing a lot of them lately - that seems strange to me. I can't be sure if they are real Moon guitars or counterfeits.

Buyer beware.

Well...not common like gibson or fender but I saw quite a few when I was there. What makes you think it's fake? Looks pretty legit to me. I doubt anyone is faking moon guitars given the resale on them used is not very high...even in japan...they are one of the best used deals out there.
