Alternate picking, sweep picking, finger/banjo picking, hybrid picking, string skipping, tapping, etc. You don't have to use all of them all of the time, but they're damned useful. It's great to learn on your own as it helps to develope a lot of skills and disciplines. But a teacher could help you focus on certain directions to take. Just a suggestion.
