How long does it take to order and receive? 3-4 months?
What neck should I get? My friend has an older style wide neck, it's too big!
Is the 10 top really worth it? How much extra is the 10 top? $500?
What else should I double check?
What is your favorite finish? Any recommendations?
What wood should I get? Mahogany/Mahogany?
What's the final cost? $2,500 to $3,000?
Who should I order from? GC? or my local PRS dealer?
Custom built order, or just try to find something already in a store?
What's a good store in Northern Virginia/Maryland to buy a PRS Custom 24?

Has anyone here ordered a Custom 24 and have any tips?
Anything you regret?

Thanks!

I do not have the answers to your questions, but rather 2 recommendations:

1.) Buy used. Check out your local CL or ebay. PRS guitars are overpriced IMO so buying used can save you some serious cash.

2.) Call Sweetwater and see what they have in stock, ask questions.

http://www.actionguitar.com/ is an EXCELLENT shop in Falls Church...they don't have one listed in their online inventory, but they may well have one in the shop...they specialize in vintage/used stuff and always have an unbelievable selection of guitars, tube amps and effects.

http://chucklevins.com/ in Wheaton is one of the top PRS dealers in the country(I believe Paul Reed Smith worked there before he was famous) and they have a special relationship with PRS...great place to browse and may have a used one in stock(or scratch n dent)

http://www.atomicmusic.com/ is another top-notch shop(ok, they also have a lot of crap in the store lol)...like a giant guitar-only pawnshop.

Craigslist for DC is also really decent compared to some areas of the country and we have four Guitar Centers within an hour drive, plus Sam Ash in Richmond if you wanna take a road trip.

Finally, I'd also STRONGLY recommend you buy used...especially if you can find what you want from a reputable shop. My personal philosophy about high-dollar guitars-as long as it's in good shape, I'm probably gonna scratch and/or dent it in some way myself smile.gif

edit: here's another kick-ass shop in Gainesville...they have a couple of Custom 24's on their site:

The ones listed are new, but shops that sell used PRS are a good place to start...

No worries...I almost forgot: http://melodeemusic.com/index.cfm?view=home They have one in stock atm.

And a piece of advice...if you must buy new, don't be afraid to tell a salesguy something along the lines of, "wow, I love it...but I should think about it with Christmas coming up and a 20% off loyalty coupon from musician's friend sitting in my inbox" biggrin.gif

Somebody who knows more than me can comment on this but I thought all PRS necks were the same width with the only difference being the thickness.

No. While the wide-thin and wide-fat necks are the same width, the "regular" carve is slightly narrower, and the thickness is in-between smile.gif.

GC is sensitive about price matching used stuff, I've found. You might be able to get them to bite on a coupon or just roll in with cash if you have it and do the old, "but I only $1700" thing...or if you're buying on credit, just tell them you'll buy it right then and there for whatever, otherwise, you'll have to think about it.

Well there you have it.

I had a CE22 with wide-thin. Even with small hands I thought it was a comfortable neck but everybody is different.

Good luck with your search and let us know.

Found a used PRS Custom 24 10 top at GC...asking $2,000 - How far do you think I can get them down? $200-300?
GC is very iffy in the haggling dept.
2 years ago, I bought a pristine used PRS Custom 24 at the Totowa, NJ GC.
It was listed at $1799.00........I walked out with it for less than $1500.00 including tax.

Yesterday, I was at the Whitehall, PA. GC and bought an '03 Trussart Steelcaster Deluxe for $2199.00 (the listed price). I tried haggling but they wouldn't bite.

I did bundle the Trussart with a $19.99 Fender lunch pail to get 18 month financing.
Fender is participating in GC's finance special of 18 month payoff.
I did get a little resistance because of the idea of a $2363.18 bill and getting the finance special based on bundling with a $19.99 qualifying item.

Hell, I could have done this finance deal with a set of D'Addario strings.
Some GC managers will balk but there's no minimum amount on any participating manufacturers items that qualify. They need to read GC's advertised finance special.
Until then, buy that guitar you GAS for and bundle a set of strings for 18 month financing.

Went by GC and played an '08 Custom 24 10 top vintage natural finish with new birds, perdy! It had a few nicks and chips, but the top and fretboard were fine. They were asking 1999.99 I'm still worried about the neck. It just felt bigger than what I am use to. I've played Ibanez prestige necks in the past, and have been playing only acoustic for the past couple years - so I'm wondering if that neck is right for me. I think I need to play a few more.
