Members Cliff Fiscal
I don't mind flat....as long as they're wide.
Members Cliff Fiscal
Hmmmm.....I'm thinking this is an older one that doesn't have the active preamp?

Members Cliff Fiscal
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Worth more or less? Did I just get screwed? (I didn't notice that until right now) How will it sound passive?

(I didn't notice that until right now) How will it sound passive? Depends on if you like passive or active instruments. No I def wouldn't say screwed but did the seller tell you it was passive? If not then I'd be miffed a tad. It should sound just wonderful I'd imagine.

For one, I've never played a completely active bass. I have an active preamp Spector Legend....which I like a lot....and is what I thought the MTD was going to be. Although, I play my Jazz 70% of the time. I bought it from a shop......their description wasn't very detailed, and I didn't ask. I didn't know there were active and passive Heir basses until this morning. The bass is already half way to my house. I was mostly excited about the tone shaping abilities.....3 band EQ. I guess I can stop thinking about Aguilar preamps. How does a MM pickup sound passive?

You could get an Aguilar pre installed if you got the 2 band probably. Vol, Blend, stacked Bass/Treble? I really don't know. Where did you buy it from? Probably a good thing....since I seem to favor "vintage" toanz. Daddy's junky music. It's my fault....I didn't ask enough questions. Looks like a knob is missing too. GAS pwned. Yeah we prolly could have helped you out there if you'd have posted a pic or so. In any event though those were made for years as passive only and still moved so you should be alright. I'll be interested to hear the tonal results vs. a jazz.

As long as the value is similar to the active ones.....I won't feel as bad. Seems like all of the TalkBass guys are ditching the stock preamp and J pickup anyway. I don't like that "modern" tone too much anyway. I love the tone of my jazz....but the MIA pickups seem like they're fairly low output. The lowest out of the basses I currently own. Never run the bridge pickup solo'd.....hoping the MM will beef that up.

Members RSBro
Cool! I hope I feel the same way.How does the MM mix with the J? Awesome.ON mine (and yours too prolly) the J will be lowered more than the MM, which there's a noticeable drop in volume when you favor the J or go full-on.I raised mine to even, and now it's a little different tone-wise, but when I favor the J or solo it, there's no drop off. It's a great mix.For pickstyle stuff I always crank it back about 75% on the MM and it just kills. I just saw the bigger picture with having a blend knob...... My Roadstar has a blend knob but I hadn't really thought about it's functionality. Little slow today. Much easier then dicking around with two separate volume controls. So with the passive Heir.....I'm basically getting a 35" scale Jazz V bass with a MM in the bridge spot.
