I'm so sorry to hear you're stuck with a tiny piece of "long" grain. Why is it the chicks flock to you, again? confused.gif

WhyTF do you people need rice cookers?

Rice + proper amount of water + 20 min. simmer on the long grain white / 45 min. on the brown basmati = perfect rice = you're done. confused.gif

I sense someone's marketing genius at work... biggrin.gif

Rice cookers = follow simple instructions, push a button and walk away.

Plus, they also have a "Warmer" setting to keep the rice warm if you cook it ahead of time like we do a lot.

And, still, I've only seen chefs make basmati rice with no water, just oil.

Pfft.

Simple instructions:

1. X amount of long grain white rice.

2. 2X amount of water. Boil.

3. Add rice and a small pat of butter. Cover.

4. Wait 20 minutes.

5. Salt to taste. Eat.

How hard and time-consuming is that, that people need a machine which would repeat most of the same steps anyway?? confused.gif

I actually like brown basmati rice better, because it gives me more time to prepare stuff after I dump the rice in the pot.

With a rice cooker, you can skip right through the boil part. It just takes care of that for you once you push the little "cook" button. Plus, it automatically shuts off when the rice is done tongue.gif

Yup! Also works well for stay at home mommies that are busy trying to keep their wandering little one(s) from getting into things they shouldn't be now that they're mobile and can explore.

You still gotta measure. And it's a whopping 3 minutes or less to boil.

I got a wind-up kitchen timer for much cheaper. tongue.gif

Hell, I just use the timer on the microwave, most of the time.

Yes. And I save more countertop space and greenbacks. tongue.gif

Edit: For steaming, I have something basically exactly like this...

B00004S9EW.01._AA280_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

and before I had that, I used (and sometimes still do use) one of these, that I got for free, in a pot...
